Friends; my blend date was 9/7 and my modules just popped, so I am hoping to have my new Bronco this month.

I am thinking that it would be fun to visit some historic battlefields and learn a little history. The open top and the off-road capability could let us cover more ground than traditional hiking (although we'll cover some ground on foot too).

Is anyone familiar with battlefields that have vehicle trails or you think would be fun in a Bronco? I've done a few searches (both google and in the forums) and haven't seen anything.

We are going to head to Gettysburg first. It's only 2 hours away and I know that battle best. I am going to test my theory by spending a weekend driving to the different points on the battlefield in chronological order. Along the way I'll look for any trails where I can take the Bronco.

Has anyone done something similar?

The location of the Battle of Schrute Farms would probably be really cool to experience this way. Definitely a pretty unknown event in American history.

When I was like 15, my grandfather came to visit us in Northern Va. He an I did a four day camping trip out of my mom’s Triumph Spitfire going to Gettysburg, Antietam, Harpers Ferry, and a bunch of road signs along the way. (He told me about an ancestor in the 20th of Maine while we stood on Little Round Top.)

That’s one of my best memories of him.

Petersburg is pretty impressive too.

Just a few hours south will get you New Market, Cedar Creek, Manassas, and Chancellorsville/Wilderness... then if you get that close, you have to go to Appamattox Court House. Lots of fantastic roads through there too including the Skyline Drive, 522/340... Luray Caverns... all within a short (relatively speaking) drive from you... and the Bronco is great for the trip.

Harpers Ferry isn't a battlefield though there was a battle with John Brown is a great place to visit, very scenic.

No but it serves as a perspective waypoint that saved the Confederate army at Sharpsburg/Antietam. General Burnside had pressed the southern flank and while suffering tremendous casualties would have all but forced the capitulation of Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia if it wasn't for the timely arrival of General A.P. Hill and his light division that marched the 17 miles from Harper's Ferry and repulsed the Union's advance. Along with McClellan's ineffective leadership and not supporting Burnside with reinforcements, A.P. Hill's arrival on the field ultimately led to the effective retreat and the Confederates living to fight another day.
