My rule of thumb has always been if you can't afford it new dont buy it used. Cost of ownership doesn't change even if the entry price does.

^ Truth. As a former series 1 Land Rover Discovery owner myself, super capable off-road vehicle, but past 100k miles and it began to self destruct every visit to dealer cost $800 minimum.
