Trying to decide between 285/75/17, 285/70/17 and 275/75/17. Looking for the biggest, baddest tires that I can pull off without doing a lift or removing the crash bars.

Daily driver but will also be doing trails, probably up to 4s with the ocassional 5 if I add a rear locker.

Thoughts on the tires?

285/70r17s should be the “True 33s”. Those for sure will fit without mods.

Anything bigger may start to rub, mostly due to the wheel offset

The thought of a 275/75x17 interested me, I went to the Falken website, no listing for that size :( Where have you seen it?

Ah sorry, that last one wasn't Falken.

I haven't been off road with it yet, but the Falken A/T4W has been a great tire for me so far. Smooth, quiet and does well in wet. Worth a look.

Biggest complaint I've heard with the A/T4 compared to the 3 is that they're much heavier, worse gas mileage, etc. Thoughts on that?

They are heavier, and noticed a bit stiffer ride, but not enough to make me regret the decision. I have not put pen to paper on fuel economy as of yet, but the decrease is negligible IMHO.

Appreciate the perspective. Going to buy the new wheels from Discount Tires as a result!

Keep in mind heavier generally also means tougher....You might lose .1 miles per gallon, but these turbo engines don't seem to care much about a little extra weight, so the power loss will be negligible. To me the mileage lost is piece of mind that you won't get stuck out on a trail or have your tire fail on the highway after a trail ride. I had that happen to me.
I also like the 285/70/17 option. It is a really standard size and most peoples goto for a 33" tire.

@jdq024 Have you had a chance to get those out on the trail yet? I'm thinking about doing AT4Ws (285/70/18) on my non-sas OBX, which would be about the same size as what you're running. I didn't want to do a lift or remove the crash bars and only do some light off roading so interested to hear your experiences !
