Don't forget TrailsOffroad if you want good trail reviews. That one is best in conjunction with an additional app for detailed planning, but the highly curated trail reviews make it well worth it. Fewer trails, but actually correct details and consistent-ish ratings.

I actually have all three and a couple of others. It's been worth it to compare multiple ones, but it's overkill.

OnX is nice due to the _amount_ of trail reviews and recent reports. But the quality of them is suspect at best.

Gaia has way more info. It's a bit harder to use because of that. But it's the most functional overall, i.m.o. But it's focused on navigation and datasets, not really trail reviews.

There are others (caltopo is great). But that's my $0.02 at the difference between those three, for whatever it's worth.

With the rain we get here and the possibility of a run with over 100 vehicles happening since the last review, ratings are suspect at best.

That's my biggest hangup with OnX too, and I haven't figured out how to map custom routes (I know it can be done, just haven't taken the time to learn - mainly since it doesn't really do waypoints anyway). I just kinda defaulted to OnX since it had nice CarPlay integration; although the CarPlay part kinda sucks and I'm halfway tempted to just run a separate iPad on the side for the map anyway.
Yah, I do that as I most usually have a co-pilot, and it helps. In their defense, OnX does do good streaming live instruction classes. It’s pretty easy (I learned) to create and save routes with markers and waypoints. Download and you’re good to go.

ONX runs better on the dash with a android phone. When I use my Iphone it kinda sucks
Clearly that’s because you haven’t fully bought into the apple ecosystem. You need the latest iPhone, 2 iPads, a Mac mini, MacBook Pro, and most importantly the absurdly priced Apple VR goggles. After that small achievement the OnX app runs flawlessly, duh 🙄

😂
