I usually drive my 2.7L 4dr BD in Economy Mode. But the other day, I turned the dial twice and it ended up in Sport Mode. I thought to keep it there to try it, but then it switched to 4H, and I was doing maybe 70 on the freeway. I know that’s not good for 4x4, so switched it to 2H right away With the button, and then back to Normal Mode. After that I got a funny smell and I don’t know if that was something from the outside or from my car.

What do you guys think? Any ideas?

sport switches to 4A

Also I think if you're going perfectly straight in high, you're probably ok

Pretty sure you're good with sport mode no matter how fast you're going. I had it up to 80 in sport mode and no issues. That's what it's intended use is. I dunno why you would switch it to 2H though. Just use the dial to go back to normal or eco.

Yeah you can't use sport mode in 2H although you can, if I recall, switch to sport, which is 4A and then get it into 4H.

But I love the responsiveness of Sport mode in the hills on the interstate at 80 mph

It's knackered. better sell it and get a Forester while you still can.

(it's probably fine. like the other guy said, in a straight line is likely fine, and sport is just a tune anyways, not a 4wd option)

Thanks, guys. Sounds like Sport is for general driving. I’ll give it another try.

Read your owners manual or look it up online and read it from Ford. While I agree with most everyone, none of us are the engineers. Not to mention, do you really believe everything the keyboard hero’s (all of us) say?

Are you certain it went into 4H? Sport mode should switch it to 4A which is safe to use in normal driving.

2H is the Default 4x4 Mode for SPORT. See Manual:
"For sporty driving with improved performance handling and response. This mode increases
accelerator pedal response and provides a sportier steering feel. The powertrain system holds onto lower gears longer, helping your vehicle accelerate faster.
Two-wheel drive high is the default four-wheel drive mode. Four-wheel drive low is not selectable in sport mode."

It actually went into 4A. I was mistaken, as I thought there were were only 4L and 4H.

I’ve tried playing with Sport Mode and understand it better now.

It would have helped if you mentioned you had Advanced 4x4 at the beginning of this. Sport mode operates differently with part time 4x4 equipped vehicles...
