Spacers Required for Hidden Winch or Not?

I watched a video where someone was installing a hidden winch on a bronco. He said he didn't need the spacers that come with the hidden winch kit. I am asking this question because at the same time I am installing a Blueox baseplate. I guess I could put the shims behind the baseplate adapter, but If they are not needed then maybe I will not. Any advise or experience?
