Admittedly the right rear wheel got spinning and then the fronts kicked in, but I would have expected this from 4A, not 4H.

meanwhile … my son climbed this like a champ in a 1994 ranger with only 2WD — he’s replacing broken half shafts up front. No computer in his rig.

Do you consider this Bronco staccato movement to be Normal?

Look at the front dr side tire. It’s spinning as well. Power is being sent to opposite tires on opposite ends. When the front dr spins, the car brakes that tire some and power goes to the pass side.
someone can correct me here, but that how some other cars work and I’m making assumptions that it’s the same in the Bronco.

Heavy, that’s precisely what it felt like — the Bronco braked itself. I really would have thought in 4H, however, there wouldn’t be such computer control. But I’m probably the outlier in that thinking. As I write this, I’m thinking to myself, “Well, I suppose that’s why the rig has lockers; to ensure both wheels are always spinning” But one, it didn’t seem like a compelling hill to warrant lockers and two, I look at that 2WD Ranger that just flew straight up the hill.

assuming you didn't bother changing the GOAT mode,
it's about what i'd expect for a vehicle that has open diffs front and back with a functionally locked up center diff/transfer case

Yeah, I did not use GOAT. I mean this “mountain” (Peavine in Reno) is like easy peasy. I wouldn’t think a GOAT would need to be employed here. Even if I did use a GOAT mode, which would be warranted for a sometimes bumpy “fire road” of sorts?

I aired down to 24 psi before hand..

Oh, forgot to ask you guys … my son said I should have turned Traction Control OFF and this wouldn’t have happened. Thoughts? Reading up on that Hero button now …

sometimes the nut behind the steering wheel has to pick the right line that takes advantage of the vehicle's strengths.

Your 2 door just happened to have the wheelbase that matched the two dips in the trail and not enough articulation to keep traction. It looked like you were bouncing enough that it kept on going after that small slip.

I wouldn’t have had lockers on either. A slightly different line would have avoided the spot. If you were stuck in the spot then selecting a rear locker would have worked.
The Ranger probably had a limited slip rear differential plus the longer wheelbase made its trip up the hill completely different.

Great color and door choice on your Bronco btw.

Just reviewing all the GOAT modes again. Looks like Baja mode (or manually making those settings oneself) would have been the trick:

4WD mode | Traction Control | Front locker | rear locker | throttle* | steering* | swaybar*

* driver cannot control without Goat / in wildtrak
4H
4A not selectable
OffOpen
Can be locked below 24 mph when in 4L
Open
Can be locked at any speed
AggressiveTightCan be disconnected in 4H or 4L

agreed, a slightly different line for your vehicle would have made a huge difference

the extra wheelbase of a four door probably made duplicating the ranger's line easier

Thank you. Well explained. I figured I HAD to enter each deep on each side. I guess I could have centered a wheel in the middle and put to opposite side wheel “off trail” if that’s what you’re implying.

Don’t drive “off trail”. That’s what gets trails closed. But a line a foot to the right or a foot to the left would probably be all you needed.
That kind of a double dip is what they have at Off Roadeo to teach using the sway bar disconnect (if you have a Badlands) or to use a rear locker.
