Second Thoughts on Manual Transmission

If I was retired and lived at my cabin I probably would buy a manual. Traffic jams suck and I like to eat ice cream cones when I drive topless in traffic, so 2.7 auto for me! I have that power train now in my F150 and it is awesome.

I loved driving my 1994 Ranger 4x4 with the 5 speed and my 72 Bronco with the AX-15 conversion but I'm starting to think that with the manual in the new Bronco I will be missing out on some cool new 4x4 technology like trail turn assist and one pedal driving. The 2.7 with auto is starting to pull at me. Thoughts...

Dude if you're excited about one pedal driving then manual likely isn't for you. To each their own.
I really wish that the trail turn assist was available with the manual though. Just one more step in the self-fulfilling prophecy.

Nothing beats driving a manual for being connected with the vehicle. An auto just takes the driver right out of the equation... have they become more efficient, yes. Are they quicker, in most cases. I’ve driven many applications of paddle shifters/ tiptronic etc for Ferrari, Porsche, Audi, etc.... I’d take a slush box over all of them hands down.... why, because their isn’t a computer between me and the drive train. They’re fun, and quick, but it’s just not the same. Now do I want to be messing around in traffic with a clutch on my commute everyday in traffic hell no, but I won’t have that problem. To each their own. For me, it’s Manual or bust.

I was dead set on a manual.... I have accepted the automatic as my lord and savior however. Torque converters are just so much better than a clutch for crawling.

6 speed with a C gear??!! I’m getting that, no doubt, never in question. I do plan on buying every Ford power add on they make for the 2.3. But I could not care less about efficiency or speed, it’s a Bronco!

I am, kind of. First, I really would like the 2.7. Second, last winter I slipped on ice getting out of my car, and tore the PCL and MCL and meniscus in my left knee. It is now sometimes tough clutching in my Focus, especially if it's cold or raining. The Bronco most likely would be a bit worse.

Ouch, get better that SUX. Hoping that the PT gets you up and back in the game.

Getting L knee replacement, R knee replacement, and R hip (either Labrum repair with anchors or replacement)...my manual days are over. Walking without limping is a Great Day.
I applaud you folks getting the manual, I think you'll love it.
I also look forward to joining the 2.7/10SPD crowd, a really nice drive train.
Take a second to think about the competition... 2.0 auto only (less power), 3.6 manual or auto (less power, and torque up in the rpm band), old 5 speed transmission (4Runner).
We have great choices here, go with what you want and Enjoy the ever living crap out of it!

Definitely agree, if I planned on hardcore wheeling I’d probably opt for the auto, but I don’t really plan on that and a 7sp MT just so awesome, gotta have it

I like manual transmissions and used to think it would be a cheaper alternative than an auto.

But, how long before the clutch and pressure plate needs to be replaced? And what would that cost to have someone do it?

The slushbox 4 will be faster and more efficient than the manual

Sure shifting is fun, but if you can't do it better than the machine then what's the point? None of us can shift better than the machine anymore

If you're looking for top speed, a Bronco isn't your best rational choice.
If you're looking for efficiency, get a Prius.

Shifting gears doesn't make much logical sense, I agree...but neither does baseball and I still enjoy a hotdog on a nice summer day in the bleachers. I love it for the driving 'experience ' that you can't get otherwise.
