Retaining washer for roof rack question

Removed the roof rack for the first time and boogered it up by backing out the triangle screws too far. I recovered the retaining washer, but does it go after the barrel nut, or between the barrel nut and the bracket, or is it not needed and I can just toss it? I’m leaning towards the latter because I’m not seeing the value it adds. Thanks for any help!

Mine fell off too and I just tossed them. Even if you back the screw completely out, it simply re-threads very easily.
