Not the case. I contacted California, DMV and Oregon DMV. If you drive it off the lot in the state of California, you have to pay the sales tax. No room for argument. I researched this for two months straight.

I bought mine in Florida in the middle of December and had it transported to OKC. I was worried about the issues that could arise with door dings or the fluke storm. However, it was going to cost more to fly and drive it back. And with my end of the year schedule it was going to be a major pain. So, I ended up having it transported. The dealer put it on a site they use and drivers essentially bid it. It was 1200 miles to my door for 950. I tipped the guy because of the holidays. Was a perfect transaction. I think most dealers use the same program/website. I did talk to Montway. They were a bit more expensive but had an enclosed option in the 1500 range. Hope it all works out for you.
