Question for the group. First and foremost my dealer has been great with this warranty claim. 3 months in and only 4,000 miles I found a small defect tear/puncture in my rear seat. See pics. It will be covered under warranty. It the rear driver’s side seat.

My question is the dealer cautioned me that the replacement will not be as good as factory assembled as they use machines. There might be slack etc.

Do I have them do it regardless or just take the cash offer instead? Or do I find an upholster specialist to do it and pay some out of pocket. It’s definitely a defect but it’s very small. I’m so pissed. $55k and I’m dealing with this.

If it were me I'd take the cash and use it towards something fun like a trip or an upgrade you've been eyeing. It's the back seat so you don't have to look at it! And eventually the interior will have lots of little defects like that from everyday use.

Week one with mine a coworker put a bag of burritos on my cloth seat. It leaked so much grease it made it to the foam. No matter how many times he shampooed it the smell took weeks to go away, and the stain is still there. I got seat covers to eliminate that worry, fired him (kidding), and now I mostly forget it even happened.

That's an interesting statement from the dealer. We have not had that experience with seat covers replaced in our shop that I can remember. Some of the fit has to do with how well it was installed and if the cushion/pad underneath has any previous wear or compression. That said, there could be some minor color or pattern differences since the material is coming from different lots. There might be slight variation in cover size since the sewing and assembly process is not exact.

Overall, I think they were just wanting to let you know the replacement may not be an exact match to what they took off to temper expectations if you're someone who is super, super picky. The few we've had over the years was mainly on Lincoln vehicles that have a specific leather type or dye. Lot more variation in those and the complaint was it didn't match the worn cover that wasn't replaced. An OE replacement, especially paid for by Ford is going to be better than a repair as long as it's installed correctly.

I had a similar in the rear of my big bend. The hog clip had went thru the cloth material. This will tear more over time. I did have them replace it and it is fine. Really depend on the dealer/technician doing the repair. Let the dealer do it.

I think it'll turn out fine. I took the factory cloth seats off my 2016 Mustang and put factory leather take-off's on, and they ended up being perfect. The seat material is made to fit the seats snug. So whether a machine is putting it on, or a person, it's made for the seat pads it'll wrap over. If the service person is making excuses (even if it's a warning) before the repair is attempted, I would preface their comment with "then you'll take it off and re-do it until it's right". Just make sure you fully inspect the seat cover before leaving the dealer after the repair.

My dealership put in a warranty claim for it and the defects on my console armrest. It was approved and they are waiting for the seat cover to come off back order.
