Started the process with the fifth wheel... turned out better than expected.

Took maybe 4 coats. I didnt sand it which I may do on the next one since there is some "orange peel" texturing. Also, gonna try to rig something up to hang the ring while I spray it. Or just not use a plastic drop cloth (the paint tried to peel away when I lifted it off).

T45 is needed. A bit difficult to break the seal but nothing terrible. Learned real fast there's a cutout for the tire valve you need to make sure is lined up.

What color did you use?
Looks a lot like the Black Sapphire Luxury Metal I went with.
When spraying mine. I just put a couple wood blocks underneath (on a sheet of cardboard).
Worked out much better than having then flat on the ground.
(I had to learn that lesson about the valve the hard way too).

I sprayed mine with Plasti Dip, color Gunmetal. Held up good so far... that stuff really impressed me.

Just the basic rubberized black, pretty much matte looking which is what I wanted.

The wood blocks is a good idea cant believe I didnt think of that. Did you sand at all? I also used blue loctite when putting the screws back in, just to be safe.

I didn't really sand them, just made sure they were clean and grease-free.
I've gotten a couple of dings after 2 years/40K miles, from rocks and/or dealer tire rotations, but nothing really noticeable.
I'll probably do a touch up after my next rotation.

I have used plastidip to dechrome some car emblems in the past. Only held up OK. It peels badly eventually. Given how much harder the wheel environment will be on things (heat, trail debris, brake dust, etc.) I'd steer away from PD. I suspect a high quality primer and rattle can (say Eastwood) will outlast PD and look better for much longer.

For my latest wheels I just paid the piper and had them powder coated.

I only did the one so far and feels like maybe took half a can? Thinking maybe two for all five if you get your first two coats on evenly, and dont miss the outer edges like I did at first.

Okay thanks.
I got a quote yesterday for $200 to have them powder coated. $50 worth of plasti-dip with a chance to do a bad job doesn't seem worth it in my instance and will likely go with powder coating them.

For $200 for all five yeah Id jump on that too, my quotes out here were far more. And Id have to go a day or two without having them installed and driving around, which is fine just doesnt sit right.

I Plasti-dipped black. Lasted about a year, but got pretty knocked up off-roading. Just powder coated for $40 a ring. Hope It lasts longer.

And definitely watch that notch!

Broaddict also makes a set for $400 (which is much cheaper than the $750 through Ford). My train of thought was if I mess them up enough ill just buy those. But clearly would like to avoid it.
