What is this thread about ? Who is inspecting your car ? Is this some sort of government thing , or this the dealer and a curtesy ? I’ve never heard of it.
Some States require an annual vehicle inspection and I guess they check to see if the window tint doesn't exceed the State's Max on how dark it is. Different States have different requirements such as emissions and tires. I remember having to get it done in South Carolina but the State stopped requiring inspections years ago.

Some states, in my case MA, you have to get a vehicle safety inspection every year. They check that all safety equipment is working as well as the integrity of tires, wheels, suspension components, exhaust/emissions, frame, and body.

You can make a case for it being government meddling, but it legitimately does keep a lot of dangerous jalopies off the street.
Really ? Is this a joke ?

Im glad I live in a state that respects the Constitution..

Up until a about 5 years ago we didn’t even have a speed limit. Plenty of people still pissed about that.

Seems to me the speed limit was reinstated more than 5 years ago in Montana.
Just googled it and came up with 75mph speed limit in 1999, since upped to 80. 1974-1995 was 55mph due to the national speed limit for you guys down there.
Living in Alberta I do remember when the limit was removed in Montana and wanting to go driving down there. Never did though. Didn’t get my licence until ‘98 so didn’t have much of a chance haha.

I count myself fortunate in living where no inspection is required. Such a requirement shouldn't absolve driver's of personal responsibility to ensure they are driving a safe vehicle. But the checklist to pass an inspection often goes beyond maintaining a safe vehicle.

For those that have state vehicle inspections, aren't there Lick'em and Stick'em inspection stations around? When I was young and living in a state that required an inspection, it was common practice to go to one of those places.

Not anymore. As someone mentioned earlier, NY and NJ are different ballgames when it comes to inspections ( I'm from NY) most, if not all inspections are recorded, so there's no gaming the system by bringing in your vehicle and having the the exhaust sensor shoved up a known passing vehicle's exhaust. Fines are outrageous if a testing station is caught not going by the book.

Not sure what you're smoking, but I'd like some of that. Vehicle inspections have nothing to do with the constitution. Granted, states like NY, NJ, AND CA can go overboard on their testing.

In MA a fake inspection sticker is a felony. And if you want to have a license to perform state inspections, they make you go all in.

Separate computer terminal with OBD2 scanner that phones home to the mothership and live feed web cams recording the whole process.

Not only will the computer not spit out a sticker unless everything is hunky-dory, but they can actually go back and audit the tape if they think the person doing the inspector didn’t do it properly.

I will add that one thing they test for is headlight alignment on everyone that comes in, so that right there seems worth the hassle to me. ;)

The inspection process has obviously evolved since I had to get one. When I was young in PA, the process was easy to bypass. Just go to the local Lick'm and Stick'm guy and pay the inspection fee. They would demonstrate a cursory inspection like test your horn, check your wipers, etc. They then just recorded VIN in a paper book and put the sticker on the windshield. Now, obviously these shops were not performing a valid inspection, but they also didn't let any piece of crap pass. If someone showed up with steel belts showing on the tires for example, no amount of money would persuade the shop to let it slide.

Here in NY it's tricky. If your vehicle is new enough if needs to pass a emissions test where they plug into the OBDII port and check for any codes. Here is where you need to "know a guy" if you want to make your illegal car pass. You need to still pass the emissions aspect but he can still pass you on everything that requires only a visual check like parking brake, lights, tint. And the big one is running a O2 simulator instead of a cat, it'll pass the computer test but fail a visual inspection, or state depending a "sniffer test". It's still a gamble to the shop owner if word gets out so it's only done for people they trust.

I kinda went off topic here. Regarding tint and doors I've heard of people passing for no doors as long as they have the correct amount of rear facing mirrors. My theory is if any doubt about maybe failing just stay away from dealers of the big national shops, they'll ding you for anything to add on a repair bill. Keep it a local ma and pop shop.

Roll up doorless or put the windows down and pull the fuse. They cant fail you for inoperable windows.

I have mild tilt on my car in PA and have no issues with inspections. Even at a dealership

I ask because I plan to not have my doors off 90% of time but I spend my summers in NY state where it’s not legal below 70% and my winters in FL where tinted windows would be nice to keep out the heat should I want/need the top on.
