Depends on how you choose to wire them. If it was me I would install a diode and have them operate when I put it in reverse and have the option to activate with a switch in case I needed lights without putting it into reverse.

You can choose either option when installing the lights. I like assigning them to a switch so you can decide when to have them on or off whenever you'd like.
