Ferries are more fun than tunnels. I haven't been to Ocracoke in years, but the fact you have to take a ferry to get out there is one of things that makes it feel special, IMHO. And you can drive pretty much anywhere. I once went so far out on the southern tip by the inlet at low tide, I could barely see the rest of the island. It felt like another world.

yeah, it's kinda fun. Waiting in line for the ferry is not. The fact that they had to reroute the ferry to a longer route isn't fun. The fact that funding cuts have limited the number of ferry runs isn't fun.

Were I to win the billion dollar lottery, I can imagine turning that ferry into a modern hovercraft with a shallow draft. Reinstate the original direct route, and have a few of them running simultaneously. A man can dream.

But, I expect that ferry situation will fall to pieces sooner rather than later. It needs serious funding that no one wants to give it.

I didn't realize the ferry had changed. My sister was married on the beach at Ocracoke in the 1990s and I visited with the kids a couple times a few years afterward. No lines that I can recall, but it's probably been 20-25 years.
