Good thinking. You can get a tailgate limiter from RTR that restricts the tailgate from opening beyond 90 so it doesn't cause damage.

I like your idea in that it isn't a permanent mount. Only need to affix it for the longer outings and not to boost a tacti-cool rating on grocery runs.

That's neat! Couldn't you also mount it on the roof rack? I like the look of that.
