My Bronco yells at me!

Every once in a while I get a red warning with tone "KEEP HANDS ON WHEEL" Yes, I drive one-handed (Manual transmission) and I thought maybe it was the position I place my firm grip on the wheel: one o'clock, eleven o'clock, eight-nine o'clock but it doesn't matter it still appears taking me by surprise. How does this work? Sensor in steering wheel? Camera looking at the steering wheel? Do I need bigger, heavier hands to drive a Bronco? : )

It detects slight movement and changes to the direction of the steering wheel. I drive the same way. All you have to do is slightly turn the wheel in any direction.

If you're going in a straight line for a while, and don't adjust the steering wheel at all because your alignment and tire wear are all great - you might get this warning once in a while. Just bump the wheel any direction just a tiny bit, and it goes away.

Is this a new 2024 thing, or something with lane centering or some other feature? Or maybe a bit of both - used to be only with XYZ feature but is now standard on 2024 models?

Fortunately, I've never seen it happen on my Big Bend, and I drive with my knees a lot of the times. But maybe I just never encountered it, I'm not frequently on a long straight piece of freeway.

No message ever on a Base manual. My guess is that this is part of the lanekeeping, so you need whatever version comes with the lane-keeping.

Yes it’s part of lane keeping assist or whatever. (Mid and Lux package) But mine only gives the warning if I take both hands off the wheel for more than a few seconds. I keep it turned off because the assist bugs me. The button is on the left side of the wheel to turn lane assist off and it stays off unlike auto stop start.

I don't have extreme lane keeping on my Bronco (2021 OBX LUX) it has intelligent cruisr but our BMW X4 has it. Tries to keep you in the lane you are in if you don't signal first. If running with cruise it will keep in the lane, will shift lanes upon signaling, and despite the car doing the driving wants both hands on the wheel. And not at 5 and 7. My hunch is there are sensors in the steering wheel rather than int

Lane centering as mentioned above. If you're driving and your alignment is good and you're not having to make any adjustments the Bronco thinks you're not doing anything so it beeps at you and gives you a warning. Turn off lane centering.

In self-drive mode*, it still wants you to keep your hands on the wheel. A light touch may not be adequate. Turn off Lane Keeping and just let the Bronco 'wander'.

Consider this a compliment to how the Bronco drives on the road. The system isn’t detecting driver input to the steering torque sensor and assumes you don’t have your hands on the wheel. Say what they will about solid front axles for off road, but you would never get this warning with one. They need fairly frequent corrections.

That is a fact. I just traded a 2022 Gladiator (which was the best driving Jeep I have ever driven). For our ‘24 Bronc, and the Bronco takes almost zero effort to keep between the lines, where as the Gladdy required constant correction and was actually over-assisted on center. No problem around local but wore me out on long interstate trips.
