It’s a reality. It doesn’t help Ford that this compounds the errors in the disastrous rollout. I can’t help but think about all the delays prior to the chip crisis. If they had just managed this a little more efficiently, they might be in a much better place.

The chatter in the build week threads today(1/25) its about delivery delays. Many are experiencing delivery delays to February 28. And I am one of them. I wanted to pass along that my dealer indicated it was a microchip delay. He showed me his order log for my vehicle which had a note on the recent delivery delay. “Micro chip delay”. Real bummer to add to fuel to the fire of many issues.

*** adding some other detail ***
from the trends we are seeing on the build week data, Ford seems to have prioritized the convey orders for the delays. Thus perhaps shorter routes would be easier and quicker to handle the chip install. It’s all makes little sense but trying.

****update ****
I know some doubted the validity of this reason for the recent delay (and I understand why) but I was able to see some Ford communication that verified. I also believe it is a short term issue and Ford has made supply improvements that will take care of this issue going forward. I know execs have made references to this recently. For now some but not all deliveries are held for micro chips.
I still want to know what group of execs. at Ford were canned for this screw up. Who in their right mind would single source your parts. Especially when it is a communist country.

No one should sell their vehicle until their Bronco is parked in front of their own eyes, just to many things can and will go wrong with Ford delivers.
I mean his car was literally falling apart where he'd hit a puddle and get his feet wet inside in the driver's seat, he needed it more than me with a second car. It was more of a facepalm story than a "I'm screwed" story. I would agree, if you have no other options don't sell your vehicle.

We send them soy beans and they send us iPhones. I know that’s an exaggeration, but I think you get my drift.

Must be why there are some December and early Jan builds still in Purgatory. Makes me wonder tho. When i see exact builds like mine, built after mine, being delivered.
I’m sorry for your delays. Mine was delayed by a week for production start back in Dec and I thought I wouldn’t get it until sometime in June or something because of all the supply challenges and the chip shortages. I was definitely surprised when I got a call the second week of Jan that my 2022 Bronco has just been delivered to the dealership (despite some of the backlogged items like MIC roof and roof rack). It’s a 4-door outer banks in eruption green. Hope you get yours soon.

Nope. It’s chips:

The real problem is that this is still the way we have to figure this sh!t out! Why can't @Ford Motor Company just COMMUNICATE?

Ford what the F' is wrong with you. All this does is reinforce the idea that Ford will NEVER share bad news until it is WAY TOO LATE!

Ford, why would anyone want to trust a company that runs and buries its head in the sand?

Ok so what happened to Ford saying they were skipping around on the build list so they could complete the trucks they had all the parts for?
Now delivery delayed again till the end of February

Thanks for the input ... would Ford step beyond their "things with chips suppliers" and contract up for supply to those intermediate suppliers?
Yes. I'm sure they are all thinking this right now. But they would need to establish direct contractual relationship with semi supplier and direct supply where they want it. In the meantime, I am sure they are exerting maximum pressure.

As a former Tier One leader during the last crisis, I was directed to move some of our secured semiconductor supply to a competitor Tier One. Same chip, completely different end-item component. Obviously for the same OEM. One OEM can't really force a supplier to cough up parts earmarked for another customer. There is always a lot of mistrust during times like these and arguments about allocation and what contractual obligations are. It is never fun going through supply shortages. It has to be even worse this time.

And I am really oversimplifying the situation... chips are getting most of the headlines. But shortages seem to be hitting numerous commodities... this is due to the unique global supply chain problems cause by the now not-so-novel corona virus.

Ford's long-standing argument against communication is your dealer is supposed to communicate with you on your specific order. Which... honestly... I can't argue with. Technically we are our dealer's customers and not Ford's customers.

The problem with that is most dealers seem to have zero idea what communication and customer service is. And somehow, most dealers are even worse at providing information than Ford is. If you don't constantly bother them, complete radio silence.
I have been trying to get an update from Ford of Murfreesboro for 2 weeks. Emails/phone calls and I can’t get anyone to give me an update. Today I sent an email to the GM asking for the dealer code and order number so Ford can look it up for me. Ford said they can’t do anything without those 2 things. I just don’t get it. I got an order confirmation the day my order was put in. The link worked and then stopped working. How can no one be able to or want to give me an update?!

I am right there with you!!! Same crap different address! In my opinion, Ford knows the timeline for delivery, THEY JUST WILL NOT TELL US because they know they will lose customers! If I knew it was going to be another 6 months + I would 100% go BUY SOMETHING ELSE! SO OVER THIS!
Agreed
Maybe Ford will listen when people get tired of begging them to take their money and vote with their checkbooks and buy something else.

Old Henry believed in making what he sold. Ford was vertically integrated right down to the steel mills. Those days are long gone since the advent of just in time procurement and out sourcing. Both of which are great until your suppliers can’t produce. I’m not a fan of Tesla’s cars, but you have to admire how vertically integrated that company is. Companies have announced their intentions to increase capacity, but like you’ve said, those fabs ain’t cheap and take a couple years to build. We’ll survive 😎.
Ford has recently hired an Apple executive to manage their embedded hardware and software business. They've been vertically integrating this part of their business. Started with Sync and have been migrating approach to other subsystems. The new guy reports directly to Farley which is good. I think Ford would like to model the Apple development ecosystem which is closed and tightly controlled. They design their own chips, circuits, and OS.... and tightly control the apps. But they don't fab their own chips. Nor do they manufacturer their phones and computers. But the M1 chip and iOS belongs to Apple. And they know how to forecast demand and manage their supply chain. They can better control quality this way. A nice idea for Ford, especially for very critical functions. But today's vehicles have a lot more semiconductors than you find in a phone. I think it will be a while before they can get their arms around it completely.

And I should add: Apple makes a lot more phones, laptops, and computers than Ford makes cars. It will be prohibitively costly if not impossible for them to replicate the Apple model. But as an electronics/software guy myself, I think it is really smart for Ford to have that type of person reporting directly to the CEO. We'll see.
