Any input from NoCal? Redding looks decent, maybe a bit high on crime?
Physically, it's a fantastic location for outdoor recreation of all kinds: off-roading, boating, fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, backpacking, cross-country skiing, rock climbing, etc. are within an hour or two.

Redding is ringed by mountains on three sides. You can see snow (a little or a lot) most of the year from the valley. Summers are notoriously hot, though.

It's a pretty conservative place in many respects, very different from the megacities found farther south in the state. It does have a serious homeless problem. Beyond that, I don't know much about its quality of life.

To all you California enthusiasts, beautiful state and all that (I hitchhiked US 101 before I-5 was built, also US 395) before I , what about the price of gas? $4.58, and pushing towards $5.00
That's because of the unique formulations required to help keep smog in check. We have an unusual amount and persistence of temperature inversions. Couple those with our valleys surrounded by mountains and it's a recipe for unusually bad smog. That's why we pioneered emissions controls. We had to.

I haven’t been to Redding in 30 years, but it was very redneck back in the day. Like, Sons of Anarchy vibe. A plus for some, I guess.

A few more refineries would help. I read that fuel shortages are being resolved with oil (or fuels?) from the Bahamas. One problem is locating vessels that can navigate the Panama Canal. Fuels could originate from Houston and Louisiana, but there is a problem locating ships that can navigate the Canal and are Jones Act compliant.
