Hi,

I’m looking for a roof rack that will allow me to open and close my Sunrider soft top panel while the roof rack is still installed. I currently have the OEM Ford roof rack, but it’s a pain to get the back clips on and off every spring when I switch from hard to soft.

I remember seeing somewhere that there was a roof rack that secured to the frame under the hard top rear cap and could hinge up when released, but can’t find it now and wasn’t sure if the height would allow the soft top to stay in the open position. I wouldn’t mind a modular rack where I can remove the front piece while driving with the soft top panel and just replace it when the hard top front panels are back in place. Any suggestions/recommendations? I have the 4 door model.

Thanks,
Nicole

Your best best would probably be this 1/2 rack from broaddict:

https://broaddict.com/products/4-door-half-rack

it’s basically the OEM rack with the front part chopped off. If the sunrider rests in front of your front most hardtop slot when open, this should work. To be useful, you would likely need to add a small roof platform to it just like the fishing concept Bronco. I sold my hardtop for a Trektop but if I still had it this is deff what I would be rocking.

I got the Sunrider (which is great) and swapped the factory rack for the Broaddict mini rack Black_Stallion13 mentioned above... haven't used the rack really yet, but honestly am still thinking about going with Trailrax with side Pak Rax down the road. It was just too much to spend to start.

Not sure if either solution would actually work for long items like Kayaks... but I am positive the Broaddict won't. It's just too small of footprint honestly in my view. But it would hold a couple bags, tent, etc...

Thanks for the photos. I do think the Trailrax with side Pak Rax is the only option for now. I had asked if they would consider designing a modular solution that could be added to the half rack but they said it wasn’t in their agenda because of design concerns, “As for a rack that splits in two, we do not do this because it creates a shear point where the bolts would be connecting the two halves.” Attached are the pictures they provided of what the half rack looks on a 4-door Bronco.

There was a good thread about using the Trailrax half rack with the Skyrider, but it looked like the Skyrider overlapped too much for me, so I went with Sunrider. I really like the idea of Trailrax with Pack Rax and Sunrider through....

That said, I would like to see Trailrax (or somebody) built a load / light bar that just bolts up front and lets you at least load long (but lightweight) items like kayaks or an occasional bit of lumber... and still retain full Sunrider functionality when unloaded. Something like this maybe....

Are you able to open the sunrider soft top front panels while the OEM roof rack is on? I’ve got the roof rack and would love to get the sunrider if it works.
thanks!
