So I went ahead and created a custom piece of abs plastic to cover the open lid of the K&N cold air intake. I h Ave Brent Estes this all day today.
Todays temps were about 65f
I ran the car for about 40 minutes mixed city and highway driving at a decent speed. At this point the temps were...
Oil - 205
Tranny - 200
IAT - 88-115
So I began to lay into it stand still to 80mph over and over
The temps at this point we're...
Oil 212-220
Tranny 205-210
IAT - spiked at 125 and began to drop as I accelerated.
Testing is still not complete but so far putting the lid on the CAI has dropped my IAT considerably. No more spikes to 170 and the faster I go the more the IAT drops. I also haven't lost any power yet. Keep in mind weather has changed alot so not sure if that has a part to play. Either way I've been hitting it all day with no issues.

I will keep testing and see but it looks to me that I should be looking at.
Upgraded intercooler
Colder plugs
Raptor hood and fenders to extract air lol.

Thanks for the response Nick.

I have since been doing further testing and here is where I am with it.

The weather up in Toronto has cooked down quite a bit since the first post. So I have been testing different driving scenarios. Highway, city, traffic etc...
I have tested with map 0 (stock) and noticed my
Oil temps reach peaks of 212 to 230
Tranny temps reach peaks of 203
IATs fluctuate between 80-135
This is in mixed driving environments

In maps 1,2,3 is where things begin to change
Oil temps reach peaks of 235-239
Tranny temps reach peaks of 211
IATs spike to 170 on full throttle

I have also noticed that since the weather has gone cooler the IAT value have improved alot. I can drive harder for longer before it pulls power again.

I have also just purchased a 12x12 piece of abs plastic and I am going to attempt to fabricate an exact fitment piece for the k&n cold air intake lid cover in hopes to drop the IAT temps I will send updates and pics when complete.

I have also done some logging on the JB4 in maps 0 , 1, 2, 3 and will be sind if those to JB4. I have exclusively only out in 94 octane fuel since I bought the truck.

I have definitely been debating on purchasing your direct replacement intercooler. And this something I'm probably going to do. I will also check the coolant temps and get back to you.

Yikes, those oil temps are on the high side for sure, and I would venture to guess that's the limiter that you're hitting. Ford loves their liquid-to-liquid coolers that always need some backup. Seeing temps like this already had me sending in some research requests for oil coolers for this platform.

That spiking IAT figure is a definite symptom of your OEM intercooler heat soaking since the higher boost is generating a lot more heat. Upgrading that would be a huge help to your setup and you'll get much more consistent performance from your tune. (not necessarily a sales pitch either - just a fellow enthusiast that wants to make sure you can get your Bronco running properly :))

Glad to hear it's running a little better! Do you remember what the ambient temps were around the first time this happened?

I would say 80-90F ambient temperature.

As for the oil temps yes during the warmer months I was reaching upwards of 235 when I was in full throttle alot.
Currently at these ambient temps of 65f I am maxing at 225 oil temps. When crusing on the highway at 70mph my oil temps hover at 205-212.

As for the IAT. I don't disagree. I will definitely be purchasing an upgraded cooler.

I really don't know if the CAI lid cover made the difference or not but I have not lost power since. Even on map 3 on 94 octane. It keeps pulling now. But it has gotten much cooler outside. So who knows.

Also I wonder when the aerodynamic flaps in front of the intercooler are engaged. If it's closed I'm sure it would kill airflow.

Thanks for your feedback Nick.

If a cold air intake isn't pulling in cold air, you found your problem.
I am running the same setup without the K&N, because it seemed shabby and didn't actually increase air intake performance.

Another thing to note, are you running alcohol to up your octane with the JB Tuner? I went with a water/meth injection because the ethanol that is sold can be extremely hit or miss. (Especially with the higher tune modes on the JB.) ethanol makes your engine heat up faster, which with an open airbox will increase your IAT.

I am running JB, Water Meth, Blow Off, and a whipple intercooler and I am seeing IATs in the 95-105 range fyi.

How difficult was the water meth kit to set up with the jb4? I’m pretty mechanically inclined so I don’t think I’ll have any issues, but just looking for any pointers since I’ve never ran water meth in a vehicle.
