Some of us (me) knew EV was NOT the future. the future I see is a fuel/electric hybrid. Current modern examples would be any modern locomotive, or even the Chevy Cruise Volt (Brain fart). small efficient generator, small-ish battery pack, elecric motors.

the current EV's have field tested electric motor designs, and now it is down to right-sizing efficient diesel generators for each class of vehicle. Diesels are wildly efficient when ran at a constant rpm, sometimes with air/fuel ratios as high as 60:1.

And you have a bunch of extra weight/complexity for not much gain in performance or fuel economy and are still dumping CO2 into the air from a bunch of little "dirty" engines.

The Chevy Volt is what your more or less describing and it was a failure sales wise.

Yeah.. brain fart. Volt was it. The tech was ahead of its time. now people have seen the cruddy mileage and lack of road-tripability from a standard EV, the fuel/electric hybrids can now shine.

If you get bored, look up Edison Motors. They acted upon the idea after Telsa dropped the ball on delivering their EV semi's

In the grand scheme of things, how many road trips do people really take? You can drive about 3 hours without recharging an EV, and Tesla has a half way decent network to charge from (if you have the adaptor) and more charging points are getting put in every day.

I know some people who drive 12-14 hours, but hey that is on the extreme edge of doing things-my personal limit is about 9-10 hours behind the wheel.

most people probably limit it to 6-8 hours in a day.. I will be running 16 hours this friday night into Saturday, stay a few days, then run 16 hours back home on Monday into Tuesday. It would be impractical to sit and charge for 1-2 hours x 3 times on those runs

Most of the population that can actually charge at home can make it work with little effort.
Only 30-35% of our housing stock has 200A service. Newer neighborhood in the suburbs, not a problem, older home with 100A service? Problem.

I could make one work easily, especially for a commuter car. My Mom? Not without a major upgrade to her electrical service.

But I won't be interested until one comes with three pedals and a manual shifter.

Buddy just did a road trip from Phoenix to Seattle. Mach-E. Used Tesla stations with the adapter for most charging. Each charging stop took about 25 minutes.

Not ideal in my world, but not as bad as folks make it out to be. Would have been a nightmare before Ford got access to the Tesla charging network though.

Standard 240 Volt Level 2 EV chargers use 40 Amps or more of electrical power and provide about 300 miles of charge overnight. Most of us don’t drive 300 miles a day (or 100,000 miles a year!), so selecting a power-smart EV charger is a no-brainer. For example, a Level 2 16 Amp EV charger will provide at least 100 miles of charge a night (36,000 miles per year) — more than enough for the typical driver.
