Mine started making a whining sound at about 5K miles. The sound was hard to pin point where it was coming from. I had to jack it up both front tires and rotate the front tires so the front driveshaft rotated and put my ear right on the noise- coming from the rear of the front driveshaft or the transfer case. It only made the noise when the vehicle was fully warmed up, hot actually. I made a video of the noise it was so loud. My dealer SM did not really believe the video so I had to bring the Bronco in when it was hot, he hand jacked it up in the front went under it, rotated the tires and finally heard the noise and they took it in. Diagnosed it as a defective front driveshaft and they replaced it. The back of the driveshaft being so close to the exhaust, the SM claimed that it hardened the grease in the CV boot. It might have been that or it just might have been a bad driveshaft, bad grease- who knows. He suggested make a heat shield so I did. I bought a section 6" ductwork and trimmed it into a shield, drilled and mounted it. I used cardboard first as a template. 13K miles on it now and no noise at all and shield looks factory.
