We came up with this inexpensive way to keep this area from getting scratched up but also stopping items from sliding around. $15 mat from Home Depot. $6 velcro if you need it. I'm returning the velcro because with cutting the hooks it secures the mat enough without needing anything else. We cut the mat with a razor blade and straight edge. Very little waste. Everything is fully functional!

Another DIY for the cargo/trunk area. FREE 3/4" plywood from the Home Depot scrap bin. They will cut it to size. Bought the same carpet rug I used to protect the bottom of the cargo area for my shelf. Used staple gun, not the velcro pictured, to wrap partially and attach. Painted the bottom, underside black. Cut out the notch for the dummy plug. Cost = $15 for the carpet rug 😁
