I especially liked the part where the police showed up and told the owner about a sophisticated ring of car thieves with advanced technology.

I bet cold hard cash they show up took a report, and promise to do their best. Spoken as someone who had $30k dollars worth of industrial equipment stolen they did not even finger print the point of entry, and said they'd get back to us.

Never heard anything from them again.
Unless a dead body is involved they don't care.

It'd be great if Ford SYNC had a PIN to Drive security option like Tesla.

faraday bag. Mine sits in a garage that has a garage door opener that locks out during certain hours of the day and you need a PIN to get it to open. Even the emergency latch locks out and need a PIN to get it open.

I live so far in the country, I don't even know where the keys to my house are.... If someone could get to my house when family is around to shoot them, they could take a chainsaw to the front door and no one would hear it lol. Good news is almost all of the houses around me are family, so strange people don't go unnoticed.

I keep my FOB's for both vehicles in a faraday bag when I'm at home. People can easily copy the signal on your FOB, especially if you hang your keys by the front door.

Test your faraday devices regularly. Some fail over time. In fact, a lot will fail overtime with regular use if they are not properly made.

A microwave works as well.

Is having a lower trim where you have to tap the button to unlock any safer against this attack?
No... and honestly the chances of law enforcement actually explaining this to her is garbage. She probably heard it on the news.

Does this actually happen? Yes, and the details are skewed some as far as the what's used and location of the keys. But law enforcement won't disclose details like this, especially on the initial investigation (taking the report first time on seen).

The use of Faraday cages, RFID blockers, giant purple people eaters, is useless unless your named Kevin and you're dealing with Marv and Harry.

Facebook? Reddit?, the last bastions of reliable information.

Imagine not knowing about an extremely common way vehicles are stolen nowadays. Faraday boxes are easy to use and even let you store the keys in the car and use a code to access the vehicle if you want to go somewhere without them. People talk about the easy to obtain pinging devices cause they’re used all the time to steal cars.
I have man-transmission…those hoodlums can’t figure out how to get it in reverse. Thanks for the heads up.
If you can flat tow it and deactivate the parking brake a manual transmission is easier to steal with a tow truck. Just pop it in neutral and see ya later.

Not sure if someone posted this, but I bought a small Faraday cage box on Amazon and toss my keys in there.
