...until you stop at a light or a stop sign.

Options are good, and not to program an option like "unlock when put into park" is a stupid oversight at best, malicious decision making at worst.
Yep I'm all for options, but personally would not activate an "on park" auto-unlock option. There are too many scenarios of myself or other household drives setting a vehicle to park when still wanting to finish a phone call, rummage through a purse or whatever ... and not wanting the doors to unlock yet.

Door unlock for the most part is something I'd want to actively choose depending on the situation, even though it would be convenient as OP mentioned when the task is picking up people.

Sure. Which is why VW offers it, and put a switch in the system for you to choose the behavior.

Not to offer it at all is insane.
