Base Sound System Upgrade/Build

I will evetually change the base sound system out but am planning to wait and let the after market develop. Alpine makes a good upgrade for Wranglers and I suspect it will not take them long (and others) to tweak those upgrades to work for the Broncos. I am not enough of an audiophile to feel comfortable with creating my own system. But good luck and please post about your projects and results. Any info will help.

I'm still considering the sound bar as well, but Ford has released basically no details on it or if it can be integrated into the factory audio system at all. Their silence on that tells me it isn't possible.

I have posted on how it integrates in prior threads, but it has three inputs, the RCA to the head unit, bluetooth and a 3.5 jack. Blue tooth overides the head unit RCA connection when connected to Blue tooth, and the 3.5 jack overrides both RCA and bluetooth when connected.

A good friend weaponized the sound system in his Wrangler with about 1500 watts and new speakers. He's a mechanical engineer and a serious audiophile

The true audiophiles I know won't even bother trying to listen to music in their cars.

Anyone else planning their audio upgrades yet?

Soon as I get my Bronco, I'm going to pull and measure the speaker mounting dimensions and start planning a build. Maybe someone will get theirs before and can get this info out to the public. One of my concerns is that the 4" speakers in the back just are not big enough to provide enough sound. Especially for the 4 door Broncos. That leaves you to pretty much need bigger housing to fit a bigger speaker. That means giving up some cargo room though and hindering your visibility a bit.

4" speakers should fit in the dash and rear pods and I can get some nice 6.5's for the kick panels.

Currently thinking all Polk Audio for the speakers

DB 402's and 652's for the kick panels.

You mean these things have radios in them?

Really dumb question(?): I am interested in adding Bluetooth headrest speakers; like BOSE has built for the OEMs….. But I am wondering if this is something that CAN be added as a DIY or at a Car Audio shop, and IF it can be added, is it worth it? Anyone have any experience with the Mazdas or Nissan’s that come factory equipped with this?

Would you first need to make sure that there is enough juice to drive the speakers effectively? Underpowering them doesn't allow them to work in their sweet spot is that correct?

Maybe audiophile was the wrong word; he certainly knows how to build a system, home and car. But weaponized was the right word.

If you go with a 5 channel amp and a sub it should be plenty of low-end. I had a 5 channel in a Wrangler w 10" and it was amazing sounding w no doors or roof. It was 75wx4 and 300wx1 (sub)

Seeing that your starting with the worst environment possible, the best advice I can give is keep it simple. If you want a subwoofer to go "boom" and impress people outside of the car, the following will not be popular.

I would install a two way component setup with the factory 6.5" location in the kick panel. I might also add a 10" (or 8") sub, sized for practicality if needed. Rear speakers would be excluded in a 2 door, but added to the doors of a 4 door. If after experimenting, a three way adds benefit using the dash location (I doubt it unless a pod is designed for that) I would go for a 3 way component only because it will perform better (generally) at higher volume levels.

Im not an audiophile by any means, however, rode in a jeep with upgraded sound one time and it was worlds above what the base system could do. Im looking for that pretty clear and just good sounding system for my base. My days of bumping as loud as possible are behind me but i still want to add a small self powered woofer to the base system. Ive been looking at the kicker self powered 10. Hoping it can fit in the stock location where the b&o sub goes. Then considering all kicker components with a 360 watt 4 channel amp. I figure that should do all i want it to do and more. Ive learned over the years to overdo it and then you dont have to have it at max volume and distort everything.

This question is not one I can answer with full confidence. In my F-150 I replaced the door speakers and it did make it nice difference in clarity, but not overall volume. I would think you are just not getting the full capabilities without amplifying.

I prefer my sound stage to be heavily biased towards the front. I've run with only a pair of fronts in the past, so upgrading just the two kick panels should be sufficient for me. I do think a single 8-10" sub for some subtle lows may also be in the cards if I can get it in the factory spot without much hassle.
