Automatic E Brake on a manual Bronco

Automatic E Brake?

I have a manual transmission and a slopped driveway. Facing down hill I turned off the engine and left it in 1st, jumped out....about 20 mins later it had slowly rolled half way into the street. My driveways not that steep, now every time I walk away from my truck I feel nervous I forgot.

I'm wondering if there's a way to have the e brake automatically engage. Ive read the Sport model engages when put in park. Im my Cherokee this was a choosable option.

I've noticed it will automatically disengage the E Brake when clutch is released.

Hmm trying to figure out how this would work. Meaning every time you come to a complete stop and you put her in neutral the e brake turns on. And or once you stop and turn the car off and put her in neutral the e brake comes on. But what if you want the car to just idle as you are just parked for a moment. A lot of variables with a manual so seems challenging. And yeh I have other cars that are automatic and when I put them in park the e brake comes on. And when I take them out of park the e brake turns off.

Is there something wrong with your Left Hand? Even with a prosthetic or a hook you should still be able to engage and release the E-Brake.

This is my 5th manual over 30 years of driving....., I know the deal, seems the compression in my other manuals would hold in gear just in case, but I always used e brakes. The compression in the Broncos small 4 cylinder can't hold the weight at all so it rolls quicker than expected....
I'll keep pulling the poorly placed E brake lever and hope I don't forget.

I have though about some scenarios, I would like it to just come on when the ignition is turned off. in gear or neutral, Simple.
When its started back up, put in gear, and the clutch is let out, it can go off as it already does. Or released by hand.

If I want it to roll while in neutral with the engine off Id be happy to release the lever manually. But 99/100 times I pull up and park, it should engage when the engine is turned off.


It was a simple question, it would be a nice option, could be on/off like other features in the menu, why not? To not worry or think twice.

It's a forum, I knew there was obviously going to be simple minded genius here, who have perfect memory, who immediately assume all else are dumb and who's worthless responses seem to make them feel smart,...I make a very nice living being very mechanically clever.
I was hoping I was missing a feature, not be schooled on manual driving.

I like well thought out design, this is not.

If you don't want the obvious answer, don't ask the question. You're the one who left a manual transmission on a slope without setting the brake. The vehicle just did what a vehicle does. They put the lockout on the shifter so you won't throw it into R while driving down the road. What more can they do?

Manual transmission, use the brake.

I'd like if the door opens automatically when I shut off the car. Remembering to pull the door handle just sucks. Sometimes I forget and I just have to sit there and stare at the steering wheel.

Use C if you need a taller gear to keep from moving down your driveway.

Absolutely. Problem is, as a mechanic, you get these customers in that never use the parking brake and when it's used for the first time in years the mechanism is rusty and it locks on and won't release.

Even though I knew better, I can't tell you how many times I was running on remote and set that damn rusty brake on a customer's car.

But, the 67K no heated mirrors thread was both informative and hilarious. I read all 10 pages and had learned to push the rear defrost button on the first page.

Install a cement parking stop/chock in your driveway...drive over it, and park. About the only auto way I can think of.

Seriously though, why not put it in C??? Much lower gear and might solve your problem. I too never used e-brakes due to freezing on over night, old F-150, so I too parked in gear. R if pointed downhill, 1st or in our case C if pointed up hill.
