Must have been the 400 all I know it was the biggest one avail and was 4XX because parents bought the best one then the motor was pulled for a mild build before even going into service. Helps to a have a fully equipped shop and tax write off for the farm I guess.

The 400 was a turd from the factory, carbs and headers fixed that though. I put a mildly built one in my 1982 bronco.

YES!! I did forget that. It has been a while! If I remember it kept the exhaust stroke open to long from the factory or something like that. Maybe a short intake. I think it had massive valves on one or the other...

Massive valves and ports on both sides, the cam was specced WAY retarded.

My built one was a (torque) beast. It would bark 38s if you nailed it just right with the 4.56 gear. Not bad for a C6 slush box.

Nice political article with no regard to actually testing between the two and total ignorance of DOT, FMVSS CARB and other FED Mandates that adds tens of thousands to vehicles. Note to author. You can’t legally build a 1966 car today.

This is why you just go with a gen6 chassis and EB body.

I built one many years ago and had it in a '75 Ranchero. Bored, decked the block and heads to bump compression a tad, used the cleaner 351C 2-barrel head castings, then just the basic cam, carb, intake mods. Thing was a beast, especially after putting 3.50s in the axle.

I do wish there were a truly barebones option for hardcore off-roaders, but as a trim option.

He also has some mild TDS it seems

Interesting, I did a similar setup for a friend.
That thing would light the tires and carry the stripes for a city block with no problem.
In today's world it wasn't fast, but it was damn fun.

If I recall correctly, the engine options were a 351 & 400. My neighbor did buy a 78 model and installed his own 460 after it was a year old and out of warranty.

My father and I swapped the 460 out of my mom's Lincoln into my 79 F-150 4x4. 🤣

Yeah we pulled it and installed a built 460 (full deal), built the 400 and installed it in F250 4 X4 farm truck, the 351C from that truck was built and installed in a 71 Mustang gravel road fun car....

Everything from the 80s was totally choked off by ridiculous emissions and poor tech.

Thankfully our neighbor had an airplane fetish and had bulk avgas we used to have fun with.
