Anyone have this issue?

My check engine light came on. I'm getting a 4WD fault. When I start my Bronco it starts in 4H. I can change the goat mode to get it back to 2H, however it stays in 4H until I drive a few hundred yards and then I get an error "drive mode preconditions not met" then I will get a 4x4 error and the check engine light comes on. It then moves to 2H, how ever now driving modes are not available.

Of course make sure not to drive it on pavement in 4 high.

I'm aware of at least 2 possible issues that can cause this.

1) underneath the Bronco there's a wire that runs over the rear drive line and is supposed to be attached to the body. Some people have had this not clipped up out of the way and the drive shaft wears through the wires. I believe it's towards the rear of the drive shaft.

2) on the outside of the frame, I believe on the passenger side, there is a plug. One person had four-wheel drive issues and found that this plug was either partially disconnected or had wires pulling out of it.

Beyond that, just making sure all your fuses are seated fully and such, ground wires are tight, battery cables tight, the norm.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, it didn't work. Waiting on dealer now. Now it won't even let me know if it's in 4h or 2H. No lights on goat knob and nothing on power distribution panel. Not sure I should drive it. Anyone else have a guess?

When there is an issue with the 4wd system it should default to 4HI. You are likely in 4HI now. It could be anything from a wheel sensor to the 4wd module or anything between the two. A trip to the dealer for sure.

This post just helped me out tremendously. After having the same symptoms as OP, I went out and checked connections and there was a fault in the wires by the transfer case. Wiggled stuff around and the error went away, so I now know what I'll next be taking apart, cleaning, and inspecting.

Thank you!
