I guess you could say the same thing about the 4-door roof’s middle panel. Maybe Ford’s original idea was to give 2-door owners the same choices as 4-door owners.

4-door owners have 3 options for an open air experience:
  1. remove front panels on the fly for front passengers,
  2. remove front and mid panels on the fly for front and rear passengers,
  3. remove the whole top at home before heading out for a committed topless experience.
Since the rear cap covers the rear passengers on the 2-door, adding the gunner’s hatch gave them the same 3 options as the 4-door. I certainly wish mine had it.
Those of us who were lucky enough to get the mod tops with the removeable rear windows have that as a 4th option as well. Too bad Ford went cheap and removed that feature.
