2.3 vs. 2.7 ultimate pro/con list

Very very few people have the knowledge to get under the hoods of modern vehicles to do an oil change or plugs let alone a serious repair.
I don’t even think it’s a relevant topic....
Neither of the offered engines Have much in common with my stroked out 75 Bronco except that they internal combustion.

Speak for yourself, most 15+ year old vehicles have owners that know how to fix issues, otherwise at that point few cars are worth taking to get fixed by a mechanic. I have no problem identifying and fixing any issues under the hood of my 2017 SS sedan if issues were to arise.

It’s a very relevant topic particularly when it comes to a sport vehicle, when your off-road pushing a vehicle to its limits shots gonna break. There’s a reason you don’t put alternators at the bottom center of the engine as I fear a lot of Bronco owners are going to find out.

Pro: 2.3L can be had with a manual transmission.

Con: 2.7L can NOT be had with a manual transmission.

No, the CGI block doesn't have liners.



Why is that a con? The 2.7 has a plastic drain plug that's easily removable by hand.

The control with a fumoto valve (not available for this plastic pan) is superb.
1) no plug to remove with fumoto; 1/4 turn ( safety clipped) valve.
2) Easy to fine tune oil level after a change if slightly overfilled (a swift open/ close of the fumoto...nice option when using 5 quart size oil containers).

3) A clear 3/8 tubing swiftly attached ( temporarily) to fumoto allows a spill free job when draining...from my understanding , the 2.7 plastic plug can get messy due to its placement ( vertical).

....fumoto is a nice option for weekend wrenchers like myself.... many company fleet vehicle Mechanics replace the plugs with fumotos, etc.
BTW, I am still planning to upgrade a badlands to a 2.7...
...a fumoto value will be missed!
I hope the ( low %) Plastic pan leak has been addressed for the gen6 as well.

Anyone know if the 2.3 and the 2.7 engines will have BOTH direct injectors AND port injectors? and what about an catch can? does Ford install catch cans at the factory?

2.7 has both. 2.3 direct only.

I’m still set on the 2.3 manual. With basic bolt ons and a good tune it will be just fine

They are not included at the factory, but Ford Performance may have one for sale. A few different ones are on the market.

I have a Radium catch can on my 2.3 thats been on for about a year though it hardly has anything in it - which is good. Took about an hour or so to fit.

Does anyone have any experience/info on tuning a 2.3 vs a 2.7? If it makes more sense to save the money and just tune the 2.3, it may sway things for me.

My 2.3 is tuned and thats putting out around 375-400 bhp at the crank. $600 tune and a new air filter. Took about 15 minutes and eliminated a VERY annoying rev hang that apparently the EPA required.

That's what I'm worried about too. It's common in Jeep XJ's for the alternator to get hosed on the later models for this reason for those that wheel them.

I have had my alternator under water several times on my FX4 and never had issues.
