The other possible alternative might be a stuck purge valve but that usually also causes hard starting, rough running, and/or a check engine light. Unfortunately neither the purge valve nor the canister are covered by the 8 year/80,000 mile emissions warranty. I'd not fill up before letting it...

Expanded gas (and fuel) now goes into the charcoal overflow canister which eventually hardens the charcoal into lumps and then the overflow is vented to the atmosphere, hence the smell. Tom

If that's not sarcasm: it's squeezing more gas in after the first pump auto shut off. Tom
