The "horizontal" mount has a slight angle upward to it. It says not to store horizontal because if the pressure relief gets pushed on while it is sideways or with the top angled slightly down the hydraulic fluid will leak out.

Disconnect noticeably smooths out the ride over rough terrain in general not only for rock crawling. I disconnect just as much on trails just for the improved ride quality. In my opinion even if you're not rock crawling much but ride some rougher trails then it is worth it.
