Yeah, any axle I've ever bought has been uncoated... Maybe a light sheen of machine oil but that's it. If it's exposed enough to be noticable, and it bothers you, you could always buff that surface rust off and hit the metal parts with some good primer and paint.

I've seen many on the road (in Michigan) and crawled all over the FE at the dealer during BNs tour. You will be in for a treat. These things are much more substantial in person than the pictures let on.
