Figured I circle back and close this out with a happy ending
Ford customer service hooked me up with a 3 year maintenance plan for the troubles. Just dropped it off for an oil change and a 5 tire rotation (my back and dangley parts are so happy ;))
Same here. Had to buy a way overpriced removal tool from NAPA. Took two of us to get it to work. Going on was much easier
I'm sure removing the alternator is way easier on a lift, or even a set of jack stands with more than just minimal tools, but it's still a pain. It looks like the new...
I wouldn't characterize it as sipping, but it is much better that driving across southern Idaho at 80+ with very strong head/cross winds. Average was down in the low 12s.
Looks like you caught some of the weather going over Soldier Summit between Helper and Spanish Fork. It was snowing pretty...
Yeah, Gaia has been a little figidty over the past few months. We did the BajaXL (in my 3rd gen 4Runner) a month ago and was using my tablet. Waypoints would disappear, then show back up, others had that issue too. Didn't have any waypoints marked this time using it on the phone/Android Auto...
yeah, I didn't hit anything I would have considered deep, and not sitting in water, just splashing through puddles maybe 12" deep. Wonder if it's lousy manufacturing tolerances in the casting where the brushes live that allows gunk to get in and bind them. Luck of the draw?
Awesome, might have seen some of you go through town on one of the days. We just got back from there (left town on Friday the 24th). Didn't do as many trails as I would have liked, had small kids with us that I kept getting told didn't want to spend so much time in the car (not by them...
Been using Gaia via Android Auto on a road trip over the past week. When it works, it works well. Not sure if it's my phone (old Samsung S10+) or Android Auto but it wouldn't always track my position. I actually like using Gaia for a road map too, much better than the crappy Ford Nav maps...
From my recent experience and having cleaned mine after failure and getting it to work fine, the problem is from dirty water getting into the shaft area and in the rear and binding up the brushes so they now longer make contact. When I pulled part mine, one of the brushes was stuck. Cleaned...
Yep, saw your post and found it. Big thanks for posting it, got it fixed. Thanks for alerting me too it.
700 plus miles into the trip home and feel confident that it's as good as it ever was. Would love to just come up with a cap or something to seal off the open end so crap can't get into the...
It would be nice to see how the shield looks. If they would just have put a plug/seal over the opening in the back of it, there wouldn't be any problems. The plastic cover doesn't seal it and it allows dirt in and that gacks up the brushes.
Hah. I think what's needed is a way to seal the opening on the back. The plastic cover allows water/debris in and that's where the problem is. Keep dirty crap out of the brushes and and no problems.
Well, winning!!!
It worked, started up and was at 13.3v, then ramped up to the typical 14.4 or so.
Gonna go take a test ride and call it good.
99% sure it was the brushes
Well, since we had a day before leaving and not going out on the trails so decided to pull the alternator and clean it. Seemed to work for some, so nothing to lose. Whole Lotta fun getting it out.
Pulled it apart and while not a lot of dirt in, it did seem that one of brushes was stuck and the...
Yeah, Moab dealer looked at entire region and not everything was local.
Total of seven of us (3 kids) so not viable to tow it back.
We're going to try and run a charger off the Ranger inverter on one battery. Just do a rotation, Bronco gets too low, we swap in the Ranger battery, and then...
So lucky me, alternator failed here in Moab. Of course dealer doesn't have one, or the additional one time use parts needed for the replacement. Gonna just have second battery and swap it out as we go home, charging in a friend's truck. It's a Ranger Tremor so it uses the same battery too ...
