I had an old FJ40 too (four-speed manual), and a 1978 CJ-7 (three-speed manual). Your FJ40 is in a little better condition than mine was! This is an embarrassment, but I was young and poor, but I loved that ol tractor. Note the side vents open :)
I think you are right. Maybe the petition should ask for the 2.7 with a manual, all the off-road hardware, and none of the off-road modes. Just give us lockers and 35s. Oh, and maybe that hydraulic sway-bar disconnect - that would be good. Aaaand, heated seats and steering wheel ;) Okay, now I'm...
Of course you are right - MTs make up a low percent of vehicle sales; 6.7% of new vehicle sales in 2010, according to Jalopnik, and I'm sure that number has dropped over the last ten years.

P.S. Its good to see some other folk feel the same way about manual transmissions, and I agree with an earlier post - this reminds me of the Ram 2500 which had a manual only in the massively de-tuned diesel.
