I've always changed my own oil in all my vehicles, and have never (or even considered) not changed the oil filter.

While looking recently for filters for the Bronco, I had to visit several Wally stores to find them in stock. Apparently people are stocking up on filters along with the synthetic oil that is apparently going to be in short supply soon.

Never having had an engine with a "cartridge" filter, how much old oil would be left in the engine by not replacing the filter? I change my oil at 5k mile intervals with Mobil1, and the oil filter element I bought is a Mobil1 synthetic blend advertised as being good for 25k miles. I would never dream of using a filter, or oil for 25k miles, but hypothetically, would someone in-the-know use a cartridge filter for two oil change cycles (10k miles)?

I'm not trying to start another "My dads best friends uncle never changed his oil filters, and never had an issue" debate. Just curious if the cartridge filters (if needed) use could be extended?

If "in the know" includes the engineers that designed the motor....isn't the recommended oil change, 10k for average conditions?

I think the hoopla over the oil shortage is perhaps overblown. I used a K&N oil filter on my last oil change. You can buy a dozen at a clip on amazon right now, which would last you somewhere between 36,000 and 120,000 miles depending on how frequently you change your oil:

Given that these filters cost $17 each I'm not sure risking not doing a change every oil change interval makes any sense. "Cheap insurance" as they say.

Could be one of two things.
Learned from my local Wally World employees that all stores are going to be reset. Pretty much every department reorganized. Possibly reducing SKUs. The main driver for the update is to better serve folks who order online and drive up or have delivered.
Specific to automotive department could be the First Brand Groups bankruptcy last year. I did notice that all Fram filters had been reduced in price and now eliminated from their shelves.

First Brand Group. .

If you crack the canister before changing the oil it will drain back so there wouldn't be any old oil retained. Having said that, I personally would not push an oil filter that long.

its a very small filter and super essy to change why not do it every 5000? I currently change at 3000 full synthetic and would be conforable changing filter every 6000 because it will filter better for last 3000 with some build up but not restrict flow

I have used extended oil change intervals on two different Ford Rangers with combined 500K miles. I always use full synthetic oil. I change the oil filters at 5,000 miles. I also use a micron bypass oil filter.

You should not used extended oil change intervals without oil analysis. There are too any things that can go wrong. Not using a micron bypass filter system is a good way to gum up your engine. If you want to use synthetic blend, that is up to you but oil analysis will let you know if you need tp change it sooner. Trusting Mobile that it is good for 25K miles is very risky.

I am not going to use an extended oil interval with my Bronco. I will change it when the oil minder tells me to. I still use a micron bypass oil filter too. Turbos need very clean oil and I am not taking any chances. I have also used K&N air filters since the mid 80s , but will not use them on my Bronco. I have over 312K miles on my current Ranger with using a K&N air filter, but again, I will not be doing that with the Bronco. I want my turbos to last as long as possible.

You never considered that the marketing department, who wants a lower published cost-of-ownership amount, had a role in that 10k interval? It’s pretty naive to take the published maintenance recommendations at face value because you think ā€œit’s what the engineers recommendā€. I guarantee if any of them own Broncos, they aren’t going 10k.

The thought that all these car companies changing their intervals to 10,000, to reduce COO amount by $50 a year at the expense of engine failure seems silly. My dads best friends uncle never changed his oil filters,
No doubt people dismiss the manufactures recommendations over "my dads best friends uncle" changed their oil every 3000 miles in 1970, and it worked for them.
So it simple appears to me with Toyota/Mercedes/Ford/VW/Audi and the like, saying 10K is fine, it stand to reason that an oil filter should last that long.
I'll bow out of this thread now.

Amazon has the OEM Motorcraft FL2062A filter element for $15, or 6 for $75.00. They also have the WIX reolacement for $12.00. I order 2-3 at a time and buy my Mobil 1 Extended Life 5w-30 at Wal Mart in the 5 qt jugs for about $25 per 5 quart container. Doing the changes myself a full-syntheits Mobil 1 iol change with an OEM fiter costs about $45 bucks and less than an hour of my time.

Based on the national average for full synthetic oil change for a Bronco ( $100 at a dealer) and the average of well over 14k miles per year driven for US autos, it’s closer to $100 per year difference.

It may seem silly, but it’s common industry practice. The longer oil change intervals also allow them to boast about reduced environmental footprint along with competitive ownership cost. Auto companies aren’t concerned about whether you make it to 200k or 300k as long as you make it well out of the warranty period.

Since I own the vehicle I and will be the one paying for repairs like new turbos out of warranty, it doesn’t seem wise to try and stretch maintenance intervals when the cost of those extra oil changes is vastly less than those of the major repairs I might be avoiding later.

TL;DR: Yes.

Could you leave the oil filter in there for 15,000, 20,000, 25,000, etc if the filter is desinged for it? Yes, you probably could without any noticeable consequence.

However, oil filters do not behave like air filters. Air filters get more effecient with use. Oil filters slowly degrade in filtering efficiency then have a brief spike in efficiency before they completely clog and send the system into bypass. The only downside to changing the filter at every oil change is the extra cost and potential for a maintenance error (double O-ring, failure to tighten, etc). Extending the filter interval sacrifices a little bit of filtering efficiency for cost saving and lower chance of messing something up (as simple as a filter change may be).

A high quality filter will easily last two intervals (10k total), just make sure you get a good one. Walmart doesn't carry the best stuff - you want one produced by Premium Guard, preferably with the wire backed media.
