Partial answer to my own problem. My setup is the factory head unit into a Ground Zero GZDSP 6-10SQ, then the amp. The system was cutting out at key-off because the installer wired the DSP’s turn-on to an ACC circuit. Looked through the DSP manual and found the unit has a physical turn-on mode switch on the chassis with two positions, REM and SPK.
In REM mode the DSP only powers up when its remote turn-on wire sees 12V. I’m assuming that’s how mine is wired now, off ACC. ACC dies at key-off, so the DSP and amp die with it, even though the factory head unit is still playing.
In SPK mode the remote wire isn’t used at all. The DSP watches its high level speaker inputs and turns itself on when it detects DC voltage from the head unit. The manual says 3.2V threshold and about a 6 second delay. Ford head units put a constant DC offset on the speaker outputs whenever the radio is on, so the DSP should wake any time the radio is playing, in any power state.
The part that matters for battery drain is what happens at shutdown. When the head unit goes to sleep it cuts its outputs completely, the voltage disappears, and the DSP shuts down, taking the amp with it. So as long as the head unit actually kills its outputs when it sleeps, which is exactly the retained accessory power behavior where everything dies when you open the door, the chain can’t stay awake on its own.
Thanks to @24GTBadlands for pointing out you don’t even need Accessory Mode. Just be in the truck with the keys and tap the radio power button, screen comes on, radio plays. So Drive in Mode (stealing that name) plus the auto turn-on switch should mean full sound system with the truck completely off.
Haven’t flipped the switch yet because the DSP is mounted behind the infotainment screen, so that’s either a dash teardown or a trip back to the installer…
