Im really excited to see this work. How expensive were the parts? Do you think ot will have to be flashed?
No, no flashing needed. Nothing is wired into the canbus. The mirror just needs 12v power and then the camera is connected to the camera with a coax with FAKRA connectors. So as far as connections to the car, it is exactly the same as the current dinning mirror (which has 12v power)

Thanks. Hopefully my dealership doesn't charge a fortune for the parts.

Hey. How did the adapter workout?

Quick update - I was away traveling for work, now back home and working on this. The harness I created work great, so that part is solved. Working through a few other small issues and testing a few things, should have the final parts list needed by tomorrow evening. :).

Amazing! meanwhile, think how much you’d like me to pay for the harness :)

Quick update.. (been busy with end of the school year, kids sports, etc). Powering the mirror is no issues and I was able to swap the pins into the new connector, so that part is easy. BUT… I am having issues with the Ford factory camera in the 3rd brake light. The Gentex camera works great when I plug it in, but the Ford factory camera wont power on. I figured I’d try the factory Ford version of the mirror just to check, and same result. I THINK I might have just been unlucky enough to get a defective camera from Ford, but I have one more thing I want to try first.

I have learned a lot (and spent too much money so you don’t have to!) so far. The Gentex mirror and the Ford mirror are slightly different. The Ford version of the Gentex is slightly narrower, but they both fit great. The Ford version uses a different 10pin connector with different pinouts, but that doesn’t really matter much. Both use three wires: Power, neg, and reverse exhibit. The strangest part is that the Ford version has a male coax connector while the generic version has a female coax connector. Again, not difficult to solve, just interesting and means I had to order a different coax cable.

I was able to get my hands on all the Ford wiring diagrams for the pinouts, that was a critical piece to pulling everything together. So one last test for the camera to see if it is indeed defective before I swap it via the warranty, waiting on a part to do that test.

So… while the project is going a little slower that I’d like… I think we are still on the right track. The mirror+camera wiring is pretty straight forward, but camera’s that operate via POC can be a little finicky with the power/cable specs.

FYI, I think https://www.bobsmirrors.com/ would be able to create a custom 16 to 12 pin adapter going forward. They have experience with Gentex mirrors and mirror retrofits in general from my brief conversation with them.

I agree. I looked into what they had to see if there was something that might help with my trials. I ended up just ordering a cheap adaptor for webcam power adapter which gave me the connector I needed.

Did you figure out the whole camera situation?

So after some more research, I believe the aftermarket Gentex mirror expects an analog signal (which is what the included camera uses) while Ford’s 3rd brake light camera is sending out a digital signal. Basically I don’t think the aftermarket mirror will work. So we either find a compatible analog camera that will fit inside that 3rd brake light or just use the OEM ford mirror I.e S2DZ-17700-A. In addition we need the right digital coax cable since there are many digital formats out there.

Please keep us updated. Id really like the ford oem kit.
