Is anyone else obsessed with intentionally over-reving the manual 2.3? The fast and furious inspired tachometer taunts me the way it gets darker and darker as if to say “Watch out, don’t think about it, don’t do it, I told you not to do it!!!” This little screamer is totally the wrong engine for the Bronco. So much that Ford gives us a fake v8 sound as if to apologize for the Mazda derived screamer under the hood. The Bronco ought to have a small v8 that lays over at 5000rpm but with stump pulling low end torque. So now I’m driving my Bronco like a Hot Hatch and loving every minute of it! Probably my “black box” has already messaged Ford and voided my warranty.

Atta Boy or gal!! That engine will last longer than most who baby and needlessly change their focking oil every 3K miles.

??? They came from Ford with a 780cfm

well the Boss 302’s and they used every cfm’s. ;^)
Yes, the Bos 302 was built to be a race engine to live at high rpm. My street Cobra 428CJ came from the factory with a 735 cfm Holley. It could use more but really doesn't need it on the street. The previous owner installed a Holley 650 double pumper with mechanical activated secondaries. I could bog that engine down if I floored it too soon (too low rpm). I went back to stock 735.

I do the good ol' italian tune up every drive or two, only after all temps are up. I didn't do it much on my bronco until I had a performance pack ecoboost mustang as a rental in NY.

Didn't realize how rev happy the 2.3 was, and definitely made me much more comfortable wringing my own unit out more frequently. Still kickin' hard after 4+ years.

I don't own the MPC 2.3, but my 2021 with an E30 custom tune feels like a little monster. With 329 RWHP and 418 RWTQ on tap she moves out. That said, the OEM turbo runs out of breath at 5500 RPM. My incoming modified one should pull up to 6500 RPM, but we'll see. The manual is so much fun :)

If Ford didn’t want me to hit red line, they shouldn’t have sold me the car 😂 I paid for 6500rpm, by golly i’m gonna use them all.

I've never hit the rev limiter in my Bronco.. but certainly on my Mustang, hah.

Bronco ain't a race car, it's a car built for a much different purpose. This is how I accept the tiny/wimpy 2.3, hah.

Definity not a race car, but doesn't mean it's not fun to whip it around like one. The 2.3L feels pretty wimpy in stock form. Custom tune wakes it up, but at the end of the day it still feels like a 4 banger. The 2.7L is a different animal when custom tuned.

Oh sure, I certainly open it up and us 91/93, but it will never, ever compare to a Coyote V8 that has actual low end torque, hah.

I'm waiting for a V6 or V8 swap that'll work in conjunction with a manual. Doesn't need to be my 7spd, I'll take 5 or 6spd that can handle the additional power/tq

Your obsession will end soon because the engine will get tired of that crap and will stop you from doing it at some point.

My 2018 Ford Mustang GT is a slug at low RPMs compared to my eco-boost engine vehicles. It’s the only thing I don’t like about it. You have to rev that thing to get any power out of it.

I’d argue that Coyotes actually lack meaningful low-end torque compared to the EcoBoost motors. The 5.0 has snappy throttle response, which people often mistake for torque during city driving, but the Coyote really needs to be revved to the moon to make power. The EcoBoost motors deliver peak torque much earlier in the rev range.

I’d actually take a 7.3 Godzilla swap over a 5.0 any day—low-end grunt would be preferable.

I guess I fall into the camp of babying mine. I do get it into the high 3s sometimes when someone calls me and I'm in first gear. Yeah, I'm not a hands-free level driver yet.
