Buy Some Wheel Locks (ADMIN WARNING: NO POLITICS)

I was literally told by the automated police reporting system that because I had no concrete evidence of who stole it, and video was typically not sufficient, they were suspending the case. This was within 24 hours of my tire getting stolen.

That’s crap that they don’t follow it further. In my area of occupied California, they don’t punish theft or other crime as that way they can say crime rate has dropped. 20 times In the last 6 month I have run off catalytic converter thieves, burglars and people trying to break into cars. I have their faces, cars, plates all on camera and my own observation and guess what…. Squat. Last time I caught a guy trying to break into one of our cars, the police didn’t even show up, call or give a crap. Called the dispatcher in the morning and she couldn’t care less. “Oh there are bigger fish to fry” she said. Told her of all the evidence I had and she asked if I wanted an officer to call. Told her no, I wanted them to respond while the crime was in progress but to call off their wanted pics and plates. Got crickets.

Hey @Wtb13000 - The Poacher nailed it. Another benefit of the Mishimoto lug nuts is that they are a one-piece design. Ford uses a two-piece design for their lug nuts and they have been known to collect water over time and swell, making them a major pain to remove (Lug Nuts Retaining Water? has some good info).

Did not read all the posts in here, so someone may have mentioned it, but I use a wire lock on the Jeep and will be adding one to the Bronco. Wire rope (cable) is damned hard to cut by hand. Sure power tools can zip through it, but people stealing tires probably don't carry a grinder. I use the Master Lock Python. So far so good. I also have wheel locks on the Bronco, but the Jeep spare is on a mount on my rack that just uses a giant wing nut.

3 locking nuts and a kryptonite bike chain. Hopefully it makes me less attractive. Bike chain was the tightest of fits and it would only reach on the bottom.

Also, getting the tire back on the carrier is really hard if you are trying to stay clean. (I didn't stay clean)

Agreed. I went with a chain lock.

I purchased the Advanced Wheel Locks based on this video:

I bought the Advanced Wheel Locks with an extra key. Then I replaced all three lug nuts on my spare. I like how they look. I don't think someone is as likely to steal my other four wheels since they're at a higher torque and they'd need a jack. The spare is only 40 ft-lb and no jack needed. Very easy for any impulse "shopper."

Resurrecting. I’ve often thought a defeat mechanism is to run a high voltage current wire through the inside of a cable lock. Thief would have a shocking finish when cutting through the lock.

I have cameras around the house, but last night I parked facing the wrong way and the back of the Bronco was blocked by a tree. This person or persons must have been really quiet too because my dogs light up with every car door and noise in the street.

Is moving an option?
