Ok that's awesome. Last question - noticable performance improvement over stock? Sound and power?
You definitely hear more of the turbo spooling which is the main reason why I did the intake. You’ll feel a slight power improvement in the pickup while already cruising. I don’t think you’ll notice anything more than you have felt with the current aftermarket intake you have.

I have the K&N setup with the dry filter on my 2.3L. It does the same popping noise.
What's really gonna drive you nuts is being on the expressway with the cruise control set, and you'll hear the popping noise as you go up/down hills.

It's just what others have said; the Bypass Valve controlling boost. The 2.3L EcoBoost has a unique torque-demand strategy (program) that uses a combination of Wastegate Duty Cycle, Bypass Valve Duty Cycle, Spark Timing, and Fuel Trim to control power. It's almost irrespective of throttle position.
I've been trying to locate the source of a sound coming from my engine compartment. It sounds like a single "thump", "pop". Seems to be most noticeable to me when traveling at highway speed and barely changing throttle position. I can't figure it out but I'm thinking BOV or Waste Gate I don't know but your post seems to be the closest to explaining it. I also have a K&N cold air intake, so maybe that is a contributing factor? Have you found a solution to eliminating this sound?

@BRMarshall I installed an aftermarket blow off valve and no longer have the issue. That sound you’re hearing is the stock recirc valve putting unused boost back into the air intake. Aftermarket eliminated the recirculation of air as it vents to atmosphere

OK, I can report this problems is solved for me. I took it to the dealer and they said there was nothing wrong, but the noise I was hearing was being caused by my after market Cold Air Intake (K&N). In this thread it was mentioned that others had experienced this same noise and it was remedied by installing a Turbo Smart blow off valve. I figured I give it a try. Installed the Turbo Smart (plumb back style) valve and noise is gone. Theoretically, I don't understand why this would solve the problem, but I can confirm in the real world it does. So if you have installed an aftermarket Cold Air Intake and are experiencing a random "thump" or "pop" sound while cruising, I recommend installing the Turbo Smart blow off valve.
