First.. background on me…. I’ve built a few v-8 engines for street and drag… tuned tubo rotaries in RX-7s and two carbureted 360 swaps into jeeps…. So.. this isn’t my first rodeo!!!!!

ANYWAY…

Just got our Bronco last week, black diamond 4 door with steelies and the 32”all terrain tires, I wanted the 2.7 all the way the 4 just seemed like it was wound too tight!!!

BUT……After a week and 400 miles, I’ve noticed that the engine isn’t as smooth as I thought it would be.

It’s not acting up (at least I don’t think so… but that The point of this thread.)

It idles kinda rough… especially at cold start….. I put high test in it and that helped a but..

It’s noisy, lots of belt noise and i swear it sounds like my Harley where you can hear the valve train, and there’s definitely injector pulse making itself known.. way louder in front of the car than our pacifica with the 6 cyl pentastar..

It’s lumpy…. At take off, if your not on the throttle hard, it kinda seems like you can feel each piston firing until you get up to 2k… From my turbo experience though, its not surprising, lower compression with no boost at low throttle and new turbos that are still tight tend to feel a bit lumpy….

I also know its tuned for torque and im not used to mud tires anymore….

My wife….. who knows nothing about engines except how to put her foot down…. Does hear or feel a thing!!!!!!! But me… i’m like…. Eeehhhhhhhhh i dunno!!!!!!

But……..I just wanted to know if this is all normal, or there’s anything i should be lookin out for!

Can't speak for the 2.7L, but my 2.3L is the noisiest engine I've owned in terms of clatter, ticking and stuff. Mainly when not warmed up. But otherwise it seems decently balanced and smooth running, with plenty of power for my 2-door manual.

Maybe these type of newer injected turbo engines are just noisier by nature?

My 2.3 is not noisy, it’s much quieter than our Land Rover turbo 4. I have no complaint

First, I love how people are chiming in with the 2.3l. Completely different engine...

As posted, the break in period is real.

I am at almost 1100 miles and my cold starts sound terrible, every noise possible, what sounds like DI noise, valve chatter, misfiring, etc. Nothing is wrong with it, it just sounds bad.

Starting up in my garage yesterday with the windows down and top off, I was seriously questioning if it was going to throw a rod or not. But the engine runs flawlessly on the road.

I'm in the same boat as you, I've been racing for 20 years and have built a few engines.

Try not to worry, that is just how these twin turbo Ecoboosts are, especially with lower miles.

I also am running 93, but will switch to 87 during the winter.

Yeah…. This thing is NOT what I’m I JUST found out about the cam phaser noise…. Its definitely not doing THAT yet!!

(funny… the pentastar in the pacifica has been rattling just like that (maybe a bit quieter) for two seconds on startup for 100K miles.. and they consider it completely normal!!!!)

I have had both....First I bought a Big Bend Non Sas with the 2.3 and it was way smoother and stronger than I anticipated when I first bought it. Very smooth and strong, it just didn't like the upper speeds with 35's.....I then bought a Wild Trak Sas with the 2.7.....This particular engine is not NEARLY as smooth as the 2.3.....It is stronger but not as smooth. Its noisier, and maybe because of the different rearend gears, it does not shift near as smooth. It almost feels and sounds like a manual transmission being shifted as it goes up thru the gears. On the up side....it is stronger, it will run 80 on the interstate without trying to down shift every 2 seconds, its getting better milage than the 2.3.....Hope this helps!

All ecoboost engines sound like shit and make weird noises you have to get used to. The 3.5 is a slight exception, not near as bad as the others.

Yeah…. The 4cyl was definitely smoother in the revs, but it felt “springy” and not solid feeling and sounded more “sewing machine” like vs “Tractor-like” of the 6 cyl!

I’ve combed through youtube.. they all (stock anyway) sound like just like mine. (Unless they are showing a known problem of course)

I can relate to a lot of you all issues but I have the 2.3 L engine and started to experience the misfire like, during cold start up got worse when my 15,000 mile range was reached.
This is the third time I’ve took it my truck in for check engine light and it seems to be coming for a misfire in the engine. They seem to fix it but 24 hours later or two-4days later it’s back in the shop.
they have replace countless things, to long to list, but this would be our third attempt to fix it, and if they can’t do it this time around it would be considered a lemon law but my advice to you all is to call your dealer set up an appointment with service so they can start looking into it.
Find out thread. You’ll see the things I’ve done towards the end of the form page. 01/24/22 Build Week Group

Yeah, same here, my 2.7 (2023 OBX) has about 3500 miles on it and it has noisy start up and lumpy idle - particularly at cold start up. Quiets down once warm, but still sometimes feel the lumpy idle. Don‘t recall my 2018 Raptor 3.5 being this noisy (in general) until the cam phasers went bad at 40k miles. Most frustrating to me is the hesitation when warmed up and lightly accelerating from a dead stop, just feels like it’s lost between 1st and 2nd gears then it kicks in and takes off. Not as noticeable in sport mode, hoping once I get my FP tuner installed some of this hesitation/lag will be eliminated…

I agree that the 2.7 is rough and noisy!!! Mine only has 1500 miles now, but I too frame up restored 64 Chevell and built a 350 with roots blower, 70 Nova another 350 dual line dual pump, and a 67 Chevelle

I agree...I'm an old gear head and I've built 3 engines for three frame up restorations two 350's and one 454...one 350 had a the old root style blower...which was noisy as hell on spin up...my Bronco has 1500 miles and when Im in the garage the echos whine and is rough...I'm hoping it's normal. I did get the 150 mile and 10 year warranty though...mainly because of ALL of the electronics

You also have to remember these engines learn how you drive and adjust accordingly. Yours hasn't been broken in yet. Mine has 19k miles on it and it sounds funny when it first starts up. Once it gets to idling it sounds fine.

Yup, '23 BD w/ 2.7 here with less than 700 miles on it. At cold start up, it'll run a bit rough until it seems to even out about 15 seconds in. (It's not noisy though). Then it'll idle down from 1200rpm to 800rpm. That's when I will shift out of park into reverse/drive. Oh, I run 91 octane, no ethanol.

I'm coming from a Toyota 5.7 V8 with a whisper quiet idle....
