So is texting and driving, so is driving above the posted speed limit.

What exactly is negligent? What state do you live in? What are your state's laws on gun transportation there, Sparky?

Guess what!? Some states DO... and some states DON'T, require you to have your weapon stored, loaded or unloaded, in a separate compartment outside of your reach while transporting and in many cases include or exclude what county you're in.....

*This is about personal responsibility, and integrity. And keeping a handgun, unsecured, in a vehicle is neglegent.

Guess what!?
No thanks.

It doesnt matter whats "required" - When transporting a firearm people need to do the right thing and secure it in a locked box that cant be removed

Maybe you are the type of person that goes through life doing the bare minimum. Ok, enjoy!

I'm going to leave that last one alone as I'd like to keep my current account, dad.

Explain to me exactly the scenario you guys are depicting.

You're assuming that someone is:
Breaking into a locked vehicle
Alarm is blaring
they immediately run back to open the tailgate or to jump through the 2nd row seating like a fish upstream looking for that one spot in the hopes it's been modified and it rips open without ripping your fingernails off after discovering it's not modified.
and this is assuming....... the thief thinks he left the fob in there.....

Is that what you guys are saying?
Maybe its parked in a campground and the owners are far away for hours and someone digs all around in it and finds an unsectured gun. Its just irresponsible. Go the extra step to secure the gun whats the big deal

Ingenious! Some people rely on the numeric remote strip, depending on your model. In another thread somebody suggested relocating the to inside the fuel cover. I just might do that.

Your illustration of the "heavier object" is well taken, but in many states that would be insufficient, so check the statues where you do this. My state requires a solid locking mechanism or container, not shown in your picture. Perhaps a skinny lock box could squeeze in there? Or would a trigger lock be sufficient?

Research your state laws, and consider consulting with a sergeant or detective (or above) in your local jurisdiction.

I installed the Tuffy/OEM lockable drawer box, which is roomy, strong--and legal.
If all of that is necessary to be legal in your jurisdiction your local DA is going to try to hang you wether you were within your rights or not. Be careful defending yourself it may be more trouble than it’s worth. Maybe some good running shoes.

Appreciate the thought. Not fleet of foot anymore, I'm afraid. I carry, and have both veterans and LE credentials, but I mentally calculate: Just how battered and bruised should I be before I exercise my 2nd amendment rights? I live in that kind of jurisdiction.

you bolt a safe from the inside.
yea welded would be better.
Much better than the potential of having another firearm on the street
Thieves carry tools. Battery powered angle grinders are real cheap and will make quick work of any conspicuously located "safe" regardless of how you've worked to secure it. Keeping everything hidden out of sight in an unusual location is a key layer of security here.

like omg, like it's useless to you if it's locked up and hidden

It should be on you or available to you, loaded and ready to roll at all times.
Much better idea than leaving in a vehicle tailgate

But you still need a Faraday bag to put the key into, otherwise if you just stash the key inside the Bronco, if they bust a window to get in, all they have to do is push the start button and away they go since presumably the key will be inside the cabin.
no way, my fob is piss poor weak. i'll throw it in the tray under the radio and says key not found when i go to start. i'll sometimes have to do some crazy spin when at the tailgate with 2 armfuls of shit to get it to unlock. try it and report back to me.

here is how I store mine when I have to leave it in the Bronco

Simplex locks are the best. All I am trying to do is make it take too long for a would be thief. It they have tons of time it doesn’t matter what it is, they will figure out how to remove it from the vehicle.

I can open/close this in the dark in 3 seconds. Doesn’t need a key or worry about batteries dying. And fits under the seat out of sight.

i can cut that cable in 3 seconds with a battery angle grinder and walk off with the lock box. try securing a $XX,000 mt bike so you can duck into a store for 10 mins.
