My previous off-road experience was in a Polaris RZR. For off road mapping, I used a Garmin with the Forest Service maps coupled with the Base Camp software to plan my routes, or archive my rides. I may end up using a similar system with my Bronco, but I wonder of anyone has had any success finding an alternative App that would run on the large center console monitor. It seems a shame to let that huge real estate sit idle and use a small 6 inch Garmin to see my routes. I have an iPhone with Avenza and Gaia Apps, and the Bronco has CarPlay, but they have not shown up on my Apple CarPlay screen in the Bronco.

Has anyone found a work around for this?

OnX Off-road, Trails Off-road, and Gaia all offer car play apps but you will need a subscription for the maps.

Does OnX offroad do this? Someone on here will know for sure, but I think it does.

I too use Garmin Base Camp and a Montana handheld to plan and archive so I am very interested in the responses to this thread.

100% confirmed
OnX displays on the screen via CarPlay

FYI: If you want to use these on your dash screen via CarPlay - know this: Apple severely limits what apps can and cannot do via CarPlay. So while all of the above are great services. And most have decent apps for your phone/tablet. As soon as you project them on the Bronco screen via CarPlay ALL that greatness goes right out the tailpipe.

No pinch. No drag. No long press. No context menus. And slow.

This means that the CarPlay version of all these apps are barely helpful - at best. Some are downright useless (OnX…I’m looking at you)

The only way to get what you’re really after is to velcro your iPad over the top of your Bronco screen.

I use my Garmin & GAIA on the phone, plugged into the power outlet. Works great. All of the trails I used in Idaho & Montana last fall were on my Garmin. I find it easier and faster to plan routes in GAIA.

I’m using Topo Maps+ (subscription). Works well with the full Bronco screen.

LOL. Yeah, that might look a bit funny but is not a bad idea, mounted somewhere in the rig.

How are these for off road trail driving? I tried AllTrails on a trip last week, but it turned out to be worthless for vehicle trails. It covers all kinds of trails, but difficulty, etc, apparently are based on hikes. I was getting worthless recommendations on routes. I downloaded Gaia, but found the UI fairly confusing. I’d like an app to plan pure Bronco off-roading trips, along with GPS and offline access. Thanks

I use onX (the cheaper "Premium" version) w/ apple car play and like it. Could it be a bit more user friendly w/ pinching and scrolling? Sure, but aside from that it's really good for navigating off-road in areas I'm not familiar with. It can track where you've been. I'm old and have spent a LOT of time in the woods w/ a compass and usgs map. I don't need or want a Google/Waze style turn by turn map to find my way around. The thing I like most about onX is the uniform high quality of base maps (think google earth), no matter where you're at. Avenza doesn't give you that (map quality can vary wildly) and requires you buy many, but not all of the maps in their store. Gaia appears to be similar.

Not certain about features of the Elite (more expensive) version of onX. Perhaps it enhances pinching and scrolling.

OP, if you're used to Garmin, you won't have any problem transitioning to onX through CarPlay.

Edit, Avenza shows up on my CarPlay. Never tried Gaia.

I have Gaia on my phone, but I must admit I have very limited experience with it. I have used GARMIN Montana, couple with the the Base Camp PC software and US Forest Service TOPO maps I downloaded from the Garmin site when I was off roading my Polaris, and I really liked it....although there is a big learning curve. The issue I had with the Garmin Montana was the small screen, and the dust that collected on the screen. However, using the Base Camp to plan my routes was pretty easy. I would like to find a way to get the same US Forest Service to maps and display them on the larger Bronco screen, and several posters here have some good suggestions. I just need to learn something new....

Cheers

Just saw that the Ford Bronco off-road app dropped today. I’m going to give it a try. On X looks to be my next option.
