Can only speak for myself... but...

For me it was simple economics. Starting wages in the auto tech field when I was coming up through school was $18-$20/hr... or roughly $37,000 a year... often with no sick pay or retirement. Starting wages as a mechanical engineer was $55,000 with full benefits. It cost me $18,000 to go to a 4-year university and get an engineering degree... so... yeah. Easy choice. School pays for itself after the first year in the engineering field.

To be honest I wanted to be an automotive technician going through high school. And if money was not a factor I probably would be much happier as an auto tech compared to what I'm doing now. But I'm sitting here seeing that wages for auto techs maxes out at around $100k - $110k (those in the field can correct me if I'm wrong). Meanwhile I was making $110k only five years into my engineering career... so... it's really no contest.

Would not all be surprised if those currently in the field had some extra time to consider their life while sitting at home during Covid, and decided to make a change. And obviously kids coming up through school now have very little incentive to go into the auto tech field.
I can agree w/everything you said except, you aren't going to make 6 figures in a modern Ford service department without "penciling". And those who "pencil" get their boss fired. Once he is gone and their pencil gets muzzled they don't last long

What’s the going rate for master techs these days??

I know when I was coming up through school diesel techs made the most pay. I’m assuming that may have transitioned to EV techs at this point but I haven’t really looked into it.

I could ask my buddy back on the dealership i used to work at. He's a smart dude, and I would assume they pay him as well as anybody in that shop as he's been there the longest now, but I know he's on the fence about his future there. The reality of flat rate work is they could pay you $100/hr, and if you only turn in .3 per day what does it matter? Wrenches don't make money in these shops, pencils do, but heavy pencils get managers fired and dealerships audited. Ford warranty audits are "draconian" in nature. Basically they send a guy in and he grabs a stack of say 100 warranty orders out of say 100k. If he finds a flaw in a claim the penalty is 1000x the amount on that claim because he only checked 1%, and they assume that that percentage of fraud has occurred. A $300 warranty order gets the dealership a $300k fine. One guy in a shop who pencils the same labor op over and over gets these red flags set. Ford compares labor ops submitted by similar dealerships, and you gotta be in line with everybody else...real busy month? Tough tittle. Your dealership does good work on a particular known warranty issue and every customer in town wants you to fix theirs? So sorry! Thats how it was when I was doing it, might be different now. Dont know/don't care...glad to be out of it!

I purchased my month old 2023 Wildtrak about 30 miles from my home and the dealer has a sister dealership closer to my home. I made an appointment at the closer dealership to have my HVAC issues addressed (under warranty) and have to wait until end of April for a loaner - yes, a month since I made it in March. It was interesting they had no idea I owned the vehicle. Apparently the owner of the dealerships (4+) doesn't work off a shared system...so be it.

While waiting, I went to a closer Ford dealer near my home (not owned by the dealer I purchased from) to see if I can get an appt sooner address the issue - with or without a loaner. They asked me if I bought the car there (which I didn't) and told me they would not perform any service on my vehicle, other than a quick oil change. I asked why and was told they have limited resources and would only work on purchasing customer cars. Seriously!? What kind of service is this? I should be able to bring my vehicle to any Ford dealership, especially for warranty work. I cannot believe Ford (corporate) would allow dealers to turn away Ford vehicle owners. Am I missing something? Anyone else having a similar experience?

Your thoughts @Ford Motor Company?
If the actual reason is limited resources then that's actually great. Think about it. this dealership is prioritizing their customers 1st, good for them (and the people bought from them)

Okay, let’s say you’re right. This is a great practice. Where do you draw the line? The dealer has limited resources, you brought your Bronco from them 3 years ago and have not bought anything since. Does the dealer work on your Bronco or Ms. Hines who purchases a new vehicle every 2 years?
I understand that dealers are independent businesses and as such they can and should run them as they see fit; however the difference between a dealer and Ed’s Hardware Store is that the dealer has FORD or TOYOTA or GM on their sign. They get a built in customer base because of the sign and, good or bad, they get to play off the reputation of the car manufacturer no matter if they themselves are a good or trustworthy dealer. Because of this they should be obligated by Ford to provide warranty work on whoever walks thru that door.

It’s really not though. Find me a young kid out of high school now days that wants to actually work hard, get their hands dirty and perform some difficult manual labor that also requires specialized training.

Is that what your job is? Because if not you’re comparing apples to oranges.

When kids now days can get $18/hour working at McDonald’s doing mindless work, they aren’t flocking to become automotive technicians
My brother just retired after a couple of decades manging a shop.
The last several years almost all of his techs were immigrants. High school and college kids just don't want to work on cars like they used to.

So that solves the problem how? Plus w/Tesla your local mechanic cant even order a part and install it. You are totally at their mercy...it's the finest plan of "planned obsolesence" ever devised! No thanks!

By doing away with dealerships and letting warranty work be performed at any ASE cerified shop there are over 280k shops in the US. The same people that do most of the work once your car is out of the Warranty period for more competitive prices then dealerships.

The point would be that they would no longer be independent, so they wouldn’t turn you away. No Tesla service center turns away a Tesla owner because they didn’t sell them the vehicle because they (a) don’t sell vehicles and (b) are company owned.

No one wants to put anyone out of business. Customers want fair treatment at fair prices. If I buy from any brand I expect that brands subordinates to service that product no question asked.
