My annual registration just arrived in the mail and it's over $600. Yes this is California but I noticed the vehicle classification was UT and I think the Utility designation is typically reserved for commercial trucks etc.

Surprised to see this and wonder how it could have been classified wrong from the dealership when I bought it?

Has anyone else had this issue yet and had success changing it, if in fact it can be changed?

UT can be either private or commercial dependant upon the BTC Code entered.

My Scouts are UT.

Utility is what my uncle’s Jeep Wrangler is classified as… so it is probably correct.

Typically states will use the manufacturers’ VIN number tos figure out what it is classified as. Ford does not have a “Utility” classification, and I won’t pretend to know how California matches their classifications up with the vehicle manufacturers VIN code (typically this is done with the NICB VIN manuals).

But in case it helps…. the Bronco Badlands is classified as an “AWD 2/4-Door Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle” by Ford.

To add to this... back in the 80s and early 90s these would have been considered an RV or ATV.

Damn. Glad I get disabled vet plates here in Texas for $2, $3 if you want a specialty veteran plate. 😂

I just had to re-up my Wrangler in California (Thanks alot Ford).

$444 for a 2015 and it was also a "UT"... I even called the DMV and spoke to someone because it didn't seem right, and they assured me it was. I used to have a pickup truck, and I could kind of understand it. But to me Broncos and Wranglers should be considered an SUV.

I so need to get out of California!

I'll take $600. How much was your first registration charge right after you bought it?

It's not uncommon for registration fees in California to be on the higher side, but the UT classification does seem unusual for a Bronco. If you haven't already, reaching out to the California DMV to provide them with the correct vehicle information and ask for a reclassification is a good step to take. Even though the thread is a year old, the information could still be relevant for others who might be facing a similar issue. You can find more information on the registration process and contact details for the California DMV on dmvlist.com. They have a comprehensive guide that can provide you with additional insights and steps to resolve this matter, regardless of when the thread was posted.

My heart goes out to you Californians who have to endure the political and financial burdens forced on you.
Then I click on the off-road images and videos you guys post, and I'm so jealous!
