I may be one of these people lol. Affording the bronco is not an issue. We took my wife’s on vacation last week as mine had to go in for a front differential issue (not fixed yet). At less than 16 mpg over 1500 miles I dont need two bronco’s. I was hoping to get at least 17 on the freeway with hers. While we had fun did some off roading I’m thinking of swapping mine out for a better road trip vehicle and have only one toy. It was comfortable just lousy on fuel and not really enough space for 4 people and luggage for a week.
I really can’t understand a two Bronco husband and wife garage. Sure Broncos are great, but I agree with your assessment that it’s a limiting selection for cargo space and MPG. My wife and I have usually had vehicles that complemented each other in some way. I usually have a truck of some sort and she has had the better MPG road-trip vehicle. Here is our list over the past 20 years (I always had my 87 Bronco as a third/fourth vehicle until 2 years ago).

Me F-150, her Jeep TJ
Me F-150, her Civic EX coupe
Me Nissan Titan, her Accord EX coupe
Me Dodge 2500 diesel, her Jetta TDI, then Volvo C30 Polestar, then Subaru Outback, then VW Touareg TDI, I got a Passat TDI 6MT commuter car while she had the Touareg
Me Ford Raptor, her VW Touareg TDI
Me company truck and 21 Bronco, her Tacoma

Then we lived in AZ we drive a lot, frequent trips across the state or to San Diego, I was doing up to 60K miles per year for work in our personal vehicles. Where we live now we don’t do that many miles personally so MPG isn’t a big concern. Most of my miles are in my work truck, a 2021 Silverado 1500 ecodiesel, which I can also use personally.

If I were in your shoes and you road-trip significant distances, I’d look at an F-150 or Expedition, Ecodiesel Silverado 1500 or Tahoe/Suburban (28+ mpg highway and comfortable), or the new Sequoia that is coming out. If you don’t need a truck than something like a Highlander or Camry/Avalon are good long distance vehicles.

I’ve almost always had a truck and she had the road trip car. She just liked my Bronco so much (got in Jan) that she had to have one too. We haven’t even had hers a month. Granted our road trips now are geared more towards finding trails. Both of our Broncos are OBX lifted 3.5” mine navy pier, hers the roast interior. I’ve read people getting decent mileage with the 2.3 but on 35’s it’s horrible. We both only drive 1.1 miles to work so for a daily mpg doesn’t really matter and offers the road trips. I’ve just bought a winch setup for mine hers has the ford winch setup. I’m pushing for 37’s on mine which has the 2.7. Then we will have close to the same clearance for trails.
