I laid out all my typical car camping gear and it fits perfectly. This is the first or bottom layer which includes my cooler, camp kitchen, tent, and other crap. Soft stuff like sleeping bags and duffles get piled on top of this layer.

I'm coming from a subaru crosstrek which I've done multiple long distance road trips with four people and luggage. The crosstrek cargo volume is 20.8 cf and the bronco 2 door has 22.4 cf, that's with the rear seats upright.

They are almost the same cargo volume just configured differently. The bronco is wider and taller, the subaru cargo area is deeper but shorter.

My plan when the oldest leaves for college is to delete the rear seats. After that no more back seat passengers!

Seats came out on day 3, now we have a nice flat floor for the dogs to use. Back seats are comfortable but getting back there not so much.

Just trying to decide on carpet of some sort of non-skid paint.

Thanks for posting! I suspected (as shown in your photo) removing the seats and floor brackets would leave a flat floor, but some people were telling me it still would not be flat.

How hard was it to remove the seat brackets? Maybe you had to pry off plastic covers, and then simply remove the two bolts per brackets as shown in your photo?

Super easy to remove the seats, yes, pop off four plastic caps and remove the 18mm bolts and nuts. The seat bottoms come off with two bolts each (torx plus). In my pic the nuts and bolts are all re-installed.

Less than 30mim taking your time.

I wonder if the plywood could cover only the front part of that cargo area to get it flush with the plastic floor?

Drill some holes for the bolts that are sticking up to get that plywood as low as possible?

right on! I have been doing desert/car camping so I had been bringing a pretty swanky 10x14 kodiak canvas tent. Between the cooler and the tent almost 70% of the rear cargo is eaten up. I may look at a hitch mounted carrier that I would then detach at camp, but I think I'd prefer some kind of roof rack.

Any update on what roof rack you've found or how you decided here?

I am getting the roof rack with my 2 Dr and I guess the Yakima MED platform. I want to be able to put my hub tent up there and likely my shovel and MaxTrax using a mounting system for each that locks. My tent will of course need to be strapped in.

Update and pics from our 4 person trek from NY to VT today in our 2dr OBX - just under 5 hours with a few short stops.

My sons are older - 20 & 23 and large. There was ~475 lbs worth of human in the back seats and they didn’t complain once. They said it wasn’t the most comfortable ride they’ve had but wasn’t bad.

MPGs - I was worried that the way I had it loaded up we’d have really bad gas mileage. I went in eco mode and was around 70-75 most of the way and we were at 18mpg until we hit Vermont. We ended at 15.9mpg by the time we got to the mountain.

Noise - with the roof box and skis on top it was pretty loud in there. When the boys had their ear buds out it was a struggle for them to hear us from up front and I had to repeat myself many times to my wife who was right next to me.

Comfort - I was pretty comfortable in the drivers seat for almost 5 hours. My wife has trouble getting in but thinks it’s great once she’s seated.

Trailer hitch platform and storage bin - I borrowed the platform/bin from my brother in law and bought an extender with a sway control attachment (that I can use with this and my Thule bike rack). The extender allowed for reasonable access to the back for packing but I could not open the back glass. I would not have been able to do the trip without it. All the ski equipment besides skis was in the bin.

Overall - everyone was happy we took the Bronco instead of my wife’s 4 door Audi SUV.

You no longer own a bronco, you own a Burro. haha

Yes, that would work but you would have a slight lip there depending on the thickness of the plywood that you went with. The picture magnifies it slightly but both floors are nearly level with each other.

The studs stick up quite a bit also. Now, you could cut a bit off of them as they are about 1/4" longer than needed to actually secure the seat. Or you could have them go all the way through the plywood and put the nuts on to secure it.

I took a 1/2" drill bit and dimpled the plywood some on the underside where the studs stick up.

I'm considering adding some sort of bar/ brace so I can fold the rear section of plywood up 90 degrees and lock it so I can put something back there and it wouldn't be able to slide forward. Basically make an open top box in the back for groceries and what-not. You could use the seat belt mounting point to secure the bar in some way.

You can see in the left of my picture I hadn't yet removed the seat belt mounting point so there's a nice threaded hole there to use.

There's a ton of options once you take out the seats. I'm planning a next version now where one seat gets put back in as we have a grand daughter due 4/26 and she's definitely going to grow up in the Bronco! Like my kids did in our '69.

I think I'd want it as flush as possible and 1/4" bump up would be good close enough. I'd use probably use an angled aluminum strip to finish the edge and black auto carpet the panel. I'd leave the rear cargo area as is to keep the jack accessible.

I'm looking forward to getting my bronco but for now I can only think about this stuff!

As a fellow two door owner, allow me a couple comments. First, I don't like the look of or the size of the 4-door. If that were the only option, I'd still be driving a Jeep. (To each their own, right?) Second, what really has impressed me is that I know what a short wheel base it has, but somehow, it doesn't feel like a short wheelbase. It rides great. I usually keep my back seats folded forward for extra space, but with kids in college, I don't often have back seat passengers. Can't wait until summer when I can take the roof off!
